English

Next term, using a variety of different sources, we will be researching a planet in our Solar System and making notes of its distinctive features. After this, we are going to be looking at different types of persuasive language to use in our writing. The children will work collaboratively to generate persuasive phrases to encourage people to visit their planet. Nearer the end of the week, we will look at a variety of different brochures and identify their purpose and the audience they are intended for. The children will then choose the audience they will be writing their brochure for. We will look at an example of a brochure and annotate its features and persuasive language. The children will then use their imagination to start writing a brochure for their chosen planet.

Maths

During the first week back, we will be adding and subtracting whole numbers with more than 4 digits. This will include using column method, and at Mastery level, creating Show Me videos to demonstrate how these methods work. The students will play games, go on scavenger hunts and get involved in a Maths Quiz! They will also be adding and subtracting numbers mentally with increasingly large numbers. This will involve carrying, holding numbers in your head, making effective jottings, and working speedily and accurately. We will be making decisions about which operations and methods to use when solving problems, and will tackle multi-step word problems and logic problems. As well as focusing on mental addition and subtraction, we will use rounding to check answers to calculations, and to make judgements about reasonable estimates. As part of our mental starters, we will be revising conversion work in measures such as money, length and mass. This will include converting measures in space units such as light years and astronomical units. We will also be solving time conversion problems, such as working out when we were 1,000 days old, or when the 10,000th minute in the year is! You could practise these at home using a calendar!

Topic

After the holidays, we have a four-day week in topic. We will be reviewing our work on the properties of the planets and their size and distance from the earth. We will also be explaining to the children the relationship between the sun and the Earth, with the use of video clips and role play. In the course of this week's lessons we will clarify to the children the fact that the Earth is tilted on its axis and that it rotates around the sun. We will explain to the children why seasons occur and how they are different in the northern and southern hemispheres. At the end of the week, we will explain to the children the different phases of the moon, the children will understand how long it takes for the moon to do one full orbit around the earth.
