English

In English we will be revisiting our work on narrative texts. Students will be looking at developing their sentences by using expanded noun phrases to better describe settings and characters within their writing.  We will also be looking at injecting more powerful adjectives and adverbs into their writing. Using our new topic of Temples, Tombs and Treasures, students will be using Ancient Egyptian friezes as a stimulus for drafting and writing their own introduction for a narrative which will include a setting and characters.

Maths

In Maths we will continue with our learning on time. We will continue to review telling time on analogue and digital clocks and also introduce the difference between 12 and 24 hour clocks. Students will also continue their learning on converting between different units of time and using this knowledge in real life situations. We will investigate how and why it is important to use 24 hour clocks instead of 12 hour clocks. Students will also be looking at time intervals and the time that passes on a journey between two points.

Topic

In topic we will be starting our new topic of Temples, Tombs and Treasures. This topic will focus around the people who helped create the first great civilizations, namely the ancient Egyptians and the Sumerians. Students will be learning that these people were not unlike people today and that we can learn a lot about how they lived through the things they left behind – from everyday objects to magnificent and rare treasures.

We will be starting with the Entry Points where children will be taking on the role of archaeologists who have discovered an ancient tomb. They will be looking through an archaeological dig, piecing together images of wall paintings and exploring a tomb. In addition to this, as Historians they will start learning about the importance of the Nile and as Artists they will design and create a frieze of ancient Egyptian life.
