English

In English, the children will be writing a space story. At the start of the week, we will be gathering initial ideas, considering what a story needs to be exciting, thinking about resolutions and problems. We will then be exploring characters, considering how many characters need to be in a story. The children will also consider the setting of a story using their knowledge of space, which they have acquired in topic so far. Towards the end of the week, the children will be demonstrating their writing skills when they write their story. We will also be focusing on using adverbial phrases for time, place and number. The children will be expected to use dashes, brackets and commas, and relative clauses, such as; who, which, where, when, whose, with and that in their work.

Maths

Next week in Maths, the children will be identifying multiples and factors. They will be challenged to identify factors and multiples of numbers below 50 and will understand terminology such as co-prime. During Wednesday's lesson, the children will continue to become more familiar with mathematical vocabulary such as composite and prime numbers. They will be encouraged to explain their understanding to a partner to reinforce the learning that will take place. Towards the end of the week, multiplying 4 digit numbers by 1 and 2 digits will be a focus. Children will use formal written methods such as short, long and grid methods to complete their tasks. Please be aware that Sports Day takes place on Tuesday, so the lesson for that day will be carried over to the following week.

Topic

Next week in topic, we will be finishing off our 'Space Explorers' topic and holding our Exit Point. We will be finding out more about how space was considered and discussed in the past, with a focus on the accusation, trial and condemnation of Galileo. We will be imagining how a court would view the evidence put forward that the earth is in fact spherical, and considering external factors that affected people's judgements regarding this, such as religion. As artists, we will also be creating and developing our own space art, based on our understanding of cloud nebulae, using a layering effect to create our own impressions of space.
