English

Our English and Topic work next week will be very closely linked. In English, the students will be writing and filming a news broadcast about an imaginary earthquake. They will have to identify the difference between newsworthy facts and opinion and write a balanced news report. They will also put themselves in the position of someone who has been affected by the earthquake and write a diary entry, focusing on their feelings and experiences at the time.

As part of these tasks, the children will consolidate their understanding and use of some of the prefixes and suffixes they have learned this year, as well as the correct way to use ‘a’ or ‘an’.

Our focus in guided reading will be on summarising texts.

Maths

In Maths next week, our focus will shift to multiplicative reasoning. Those children who do not yet have a sound understanding of the 3, 4 and 8 times tables will focus on these to begin the week. The remainder of the week will focus on mental and formal written methods for multiplication and division. This will give the children the opportunity to consolidate and apply the skills they have developed in this area so far this year, as well as applying these methods to real-life problem solving activities.

Topic

In Topic next week, we are very excited to be starting our new topic, ‘Active Planet’. To begin this unit, the children will learn all about earthquakes – what they are, how they are caused and what they can do to help protect themselves and help others. We will also investigate what makes buildings strong – how some can survive an earthquake but others not. The children will also learn about protective clothing and equipment and how to put together a survival kit.
