Letter from the Head of Primary - 26th May 2016

At the end of last week and over the weekend we celebrated many great achievements by our Year 4, 5 and 6 students who travelled to Ho Chi Minh to participate in the Primary FOBISIA Games. Hopefully you will have seen many of the pictures which show our students competing in the four sporting areas of football, T-ball, swimming and athletics, and winning many medals. The students were accompanied by some very dedicated parent supporters who cheered until their voices were hoarse and our team of PE teachers and Year 4 Leader Mr Kalff who had coached the team in preparation for the event. I know everyone at the primary school is incredibly proud of the students’ performance.

We were also very fortunate this week to have two class assemblies. On Tuesday morning, Class 1B shared with us their learning from their topic ‘Time Travellers’. The students took us on a journey through time pointing out some key historical events that have had an impact on our lives today. They also explained how technology has changed in the world of cinema and we were very impressed at their efforts to produce their own silent movies and stop motion films.

Today, it was the turn of Class 4C who shared their learning linked to their topic ‘Temples, Tombs and Treasures’. The students presented a very entertaining and musical assembly highlighting key features of ancient Egyptian times, all through the discovery of Tutankhamun’s tomb by Howard Carter. The Year 4 students gave some very impressive and confident performances.

Also this week, our Year 6 students celebrated and shared the work they have been completing as part of their Computing topic ‘We are App Developers’. Again, I was very impressed at the level of expertise of our Year 6 students who had thought carefully about an original App they could create and seen the project through from the first concept to final production of the App. This project required a lot of perseverance with data sometimes being lost and links not always quite working efficiently, but it all came together and Year 6 parents were able to see for themselves yesterday the hard work that had gone into each of the Apps.

Finally, as we come to the end of a busy week, we are now beginning to prepare our class lists for next academic year. To that end, your class teacher will have emailed home a letter yesterday asking you and your child to consider friendship choices for next year, so we can ensure every child is in a class with one of their chosen friends. Class lists do take some time to prepare but, with this information, we can hopefully ensure that all of our students have a smooth progression into their next class. You can, of course, always speak with your child’s class teacher or myself and Mr Scrymgeour if you have any questions about the forthcoming academic year.
