Year 10 News - 3 June 2016

As you receive this letter, students in Year 10 will just be finishing their end-of-year exams. This has been an intense period for all students, with examinations packed into an 8-day schedule. The students have conducted themselves impeccably and the week has gone without a hitch. I am sure they will be exhausted after this tiring week, so please make sure you congratulate your son/daughter on a job well done. Results will be published in due course, and students will receive an overall printout of all their results to replicate their real exams next summer. I really hope they achieve the results they were hoping for.

Summer Fun Day – Tomorrow sees NAIS Pudong host our annual summer event. The day runs from 11-3 and promises to be a fun-packed day with entertainment, games, competitions, food and drink. Year 10 students will be hosting the Glamour Tent! We hope to see you all tomorrow and hope you enjoy the day.

Learning Beyond the Classroom Week – The final week of term sees students enrich their learning experiences beyond the classroom and finish the year with 4 days of events and trips outside of the classroom environment. Information about Y10 and all other year groups will be sent out in a separate document. Please take a look and if you have any questions, do not hesitate to contact me.

And now time to find out what has been happening inside the classroom…

A View from the Classroom

Mrs. Mao – Mandarin teacher

Last week, Year 10 students in Native Mandarin class had a debate on whether the environment has an influence on individuals or not. The discussion was lively; everyone was enthusiastic and excited to express their opinions and tried to support their side. All the students were able to use their life experiences or some celebrities’ stories as examples and evidence to support their arguments. I’m very glad to see some of them could successfully find the other side's flawed logic and launch a strike against opponents' arguments. In the end, Gerald Gan, Lu Hao Rui Harry, Wailam Kam(Bill), Tina Hong and Desmond Pang won the debate! Congratulations!

Mrs. Howard – Biology Teacher

Year 10 have been completing eye dissection, as part of the nervous system topic, looking at the eye as a receptor.

Student Reporter - Annefloor Gabrielse

BIOLOGY - We’ve started a new topic this week and it’s about the nervous system. Today in the lesson, we learned about sensitivity and we described how organisms are able to respond to changes in the environment. After understanding what sensitivity really is, we did a small experiment.

ECONOMICS - Also in Economics we’ve just started a new topic: Government economic policy. Firstly, most of us didn’t understand what it was about because it’s a difficult topic with lots of terms to remember, but after Mr. Jones used some good and clear examples we all understood it.

ENGLISH - In the beginning of this year we’ve read some small stories and analysed them but most of us forgot what the stories are about by now. Therefore, today, we split in groups and picked one of the stories to just re-read it and write down some questions because, for our homework, we have to re-read all the stories and then next lesson we have to answer questions to check if we all understand it.
