GYLC Day 4: Creating an Impact in the International Community

If I was to describe this day in one word, this would be "Excitement". This is because today was the day we had our first simulation of the UN Security Council (UNSC) in which we got to debate. It is also the day I had the once-in-a-lifetime opportunity of introducing our keynote speaker, a senior official of the World Bank.

As always, we started breakfast early in the morning and went to our LG meeting at the normal time. We were assigned different roles for the UNSC simulation. The roles were: foreign minister, ambassador and information attache. I was assigned as the Ambassador for Turkey and my role was to air my country's views during the debate. As the Turkish delegation, we came up with an opening statement with which the Ambassador's speech would commence. Since it was a joint effort, the opening statement was very well crafted.

Before we started our conference, Ms. Angelica Silvero, Speaker Bureau of External Affairs of the World Bank, came to the Pentagon Hotel to enlighten us about the role and functions of the World Bank. I was honoured to do the introduction speech for her, which was very exciting. From her talk I was able to have a deeper insight of how the World Bank works and all the types of investments they have done in the past. She said the World Bank lends up to 66.8 billion US dollars; however, it is still not enough money as the value is very low compared to the world's combined GDP. Her talk was a valuable introduction to development economics which I will cover in IB Economics next year. At the end of the talk, I also asked a question in which I sought to know which of the Hank's investment (infrastructure, education and health care) would affect a countries long-term economic growth the most. She responded by saying how each of the variables needs to work together in order for their impact to be meaningful.

After lunch, we started our simulation which I found to be quite different compared to the MUN conferences that I have grown used to, although the basic concepts were similar. The Russian Federation was Turkey's main opponent, although we were able to enlist USA and China to our side to win by majority of the votes and, luckily, the Russian Federation did not use their veto power. The day ended with our participation in the GYLC Olympics through which we got to compete in a variety of games with the other country groups.

If I were to choose my favorite of the four days we've had at the GYLC, today would definitely be my choice.
