Message from Secondary - 13th January 2017

Happy New Year! We hope that you had a relaxing break and are ready for the busy term ahead! This week the mock exams for Years 11 and 13 began and we’d like to commend the students for their mature approach to these valuable assessments. We were also delighted to receive the improved resit results for some of last year’s Year 13 students and a big congratulations goes out to Aiden Wong who has achieved our highest point score of 44.

Next week will be another busy week with continued mock exams, the ACAMIS basketball event in Hong Kong, a Juilliard alumni visitor for dance, the Seven Minute Challenge House event as well as the Academic Review Evenings for Years 7-9. We are delighted to be welcoming Juilliard alumni Ingrid Kapteyn to school on Monday to run some dance workshops with our students. Ingrid is currently performing in Punchdrunk’s production of ‘Sleep no more’ in Shanghai. Additionally, continuing with the House spirit from last term, students are invited to participate in the Seven Minute Challenge House event taking place on Tuesday for Years 7-9 and Wednesday for Years 10-13.

We also have some good news to celebrate; two of our Year 13 students, Sammi and I-Zac have developed an internationalism survey for all of the Secondary students in the Nord Anglia family (43 different schools across 15 countries). They worked hard to align their questions with those from the OECD research so that the data collected can be compared with OECD averages. This is an amazing piece of work that has impressed senior members of Nord Anglia Education and we are so excited to see the results they receive. The survey is now live with responses from a number of schools have already been received.

Furthermore, our students took part in the first Nord Anglia video to video debating competition against Nord Anglia International School Hong Kong.

From our Debate Leader, Mr Lukose:

For the last few weeks, 3 of our year 7 students; Grace Shen, Harry Lin and Lenard Chang have been competing in debate through NAU initiative against Nord Anglia International School Hong Kong. It has involved hard work during CCA times and some lunch time sessions in order to reach present levels. We have been opposing the debate motion that says ‘Half of farm land should be converted to wild land’. This has been through video exchanges with our competitor. The final round which may be a live debate through a method that we are figuring out takes place next week. I have been very impressed by the standard of debating shown by students from both schools which has in turn raised their debating confidence level.

We look forward to seeing you at the Academic Review Evenings next week.

Best wishes,

Carol Camargo and Therese Andrews
