Year 4 Week Ahead Information

An overview of the week ahead in Year 4

  • Year 4 begin their new topic

Information and Reminders

  • Reading books will be changed on a Monday and a Thursday. We have sent activities home with the children for you to try with them and their reading books. We are wanting Year 4 children to read at home at least 3 times a week. If you read with your child at home please mark inside their learning journals for their class teachers to see.
  • Homework is sent on Wednesdays and must be returned on Mondays to be marked. Please make sure you encourage your child to complete it on their own and inform us if they found the activity challenging so we can further support them in school. They can sign up for homework club on Thursdays and Fridays which is first come, first served.
  • Don’t forget to check Class Dojo to see how many House Points your child has been collecting and to see posts of what is happening in your child’s class.
  • As the weather turns colder please can you ensure that your children are wearing winter uniform and are bringing a coat to school with them.

English

In English this week we will be continuing to look at our book “Atlas of Adventures - A collection of natural wonders, exciting experiences and fun festivals from the four corners of the globe” by Lucy Letherland.  We are creating our very own city travel guided using organisational skills and sub-headings and headings. Moving on from this we will be looking at the importance of proof reading and editing our work to ensure that we don’t have grammatical and spelling mistakes. Alongside this we will be recapping the importance of dictionary skills to aid our editing work. At the end of the week we will be completing our fact files by exploring the use of a range of sentence structures with a particular emphasis on the use of fronted adverbials.

Guided Reading: In guided reading this week we will be identifying and discussing themes and conventions in a wide range of writing.

Spelling: In our spelling lesson this week we will be focussing on the rules of spelling the prefixes inter and anti.

Maths

Next week in maths we will begin our topic on exploring fractions and decimals. We will start the week by exploring what the term hundredth means. From here we will discover how dividing an object in one hundred equal parts create hundredths. We will also begin to develop skills around being able to manipulate these numbers to create fractions. Towards the end of the week we will be moving onto being able to recognise that fractions can be represented as a decimal number and vice versa. To complete the week we will use all the knowledge we have learnt and apply these to solving problems.

Topic

This week we are going to become geographers, we will be looking at being able to take a world map and plot the countries that we have travelled to, the places we have lived and locating both our home country and China. From here we will be looking at a map of China and locating the places within China that we have travelled to. At the end of the week we will be focussing on becoming internationally minded and looking at the festival Chinese New Year. On Thursday we will have our Chinese New Year Dress Up Celebrations.
