Year 6 Week Ahead Information

An overview of the week ahead in Year 6

  • Year 6 as investigators

Information and Reminders

It was very productive to meet so many parents during the Academic Review Evenings. It is always helpful for teachers to share successes and communicate areas of support. Thank you to all who attended.

We will reach the finale of our Investigators topic unit, which culminates with a crime scene investigation, followed by presentation of evidence to the Chief of Police.

We wish safe travels to those who are leaving Shanghai during the Chinese New Year holiday, and look forward to seeing students back on 6th February to continue the spring term.

English

In English, we will continue to look at life stories through the medium of biographies and autobiographies. Students will create their own biographies of admirable personalities, and research using published biographies as exemplar material. Spellings will be tested as an ongoing weekly homework.

Maths

In maths we will complete an assessment on proportional reasoning, then start looking at patterns, by describing and generating number sequences. We will explore terms like ‘linear’, ‘ascending’ and ‘sequence’. Students will be asked to create their own patterns. Some will use algebra to find a rule and find the ‘nth’ term.

Topic

We will finish our ‘Investigators’ unit by applying all we have learned about scientific experiments. Students will handle a murder mystery case by designing fair tests to analyse exhibits of evidence. They will also practice improving reliability and reporting on their findings. They will need to recall their knowledge of pH, insulation, friction and chromatography in order to identify the murderer and convince the Chief of Police.
