Message from Primary - 10th February

Dear Parents,

We have been setting our Early Years and Primary students some challenges this week – all linked to the high expectations we have of them in their learning, but also in the way they conduct themselves around the school.

  • primary

One such challenge presented to the students this week was the lining up challenge. We want to ensure that following breaktimes and lunchtimes the students return to lessons in a calm and orderly manner and are ready to begin their learning. For any class who demonstrates this they will be given a token, the culmination of which will lead to a reward chosen by the students themselves. This challenge really relies on teamwork and working together as a class, and already we have seen some superb walking around the school building.

With our Year 5 and Year 6 students this week, we also discussed making sensible choices, particularly with regards to the use of technology. Our Upper Junior students are fortunate to have their own iPad which they can use in lessons at appropriate times. However, there has been a need to remind students on occasion of what constitutes appropriate use and, as Mrs Wallace refers to in her newsletter, the need to be safe online.

Having highlighted Safer Internet Day with the students earlier this week, we have spent time discussing with them things that they may need to consider when using apps, online games and websites. Many of our students were able to identify the possible risks, but had also not considered some. By keeping an open dialogue with our students, as teachers and as parents, we can keep abreast of what is happening online and ensure as best we can that our students are safe, but also using the internet in a responsible manner. We look forward to hosting information sessions for parents in the near future about being safe online.

Speaking of information sessions, next Wednesday we will be hosting two coffee mornings. Our Early Years team will be leading a workshop on the importance of fine motor skills, which will be held from 9am to 10am in Sports Hall A. We will also be hosting a Maths Calculation workshop from 9am to 10.30am in the Hive, for parents of primary children. This is something we regularly get quizzed on, as calculation methods can be quite different. We therefore hope that you are able to come along and try out your maths skills with us!

With best wishes,

Lisa Passante

Head of Primary
