Home and School – Best Friends!

Parents are major contributors in their children’s education especially from birth to their youth years. You are the ones that guide the development of your child’s character, attitudes and interests.  It is important for parents to nurture a positive atmosphere that supports what takes place in school and to consolidate the passion to learn. Initially, your child may become motivated to please you but, in time, they will want to achieve success to please themselves. However, you are not the only one teaching your child and their school and teachers also play a major role not only in your child’s academic journey but also in developing their emotional and social well-being.

Everyone benefits, especially your child, when parents and teachers work well together. Parents and teachers can provide each other with unique insight and different perspectives about the same child, gaining a more holistic understanding of your child, their abilities, strengths, and challenges. This in turn enables teachers to tailor your child’s learning and allows them to provide the best learning opportunities possible for your child to progress and succeed in their achievements.

Here at NAIS, building a strong home-school partnership is imperative to us and there are a variety of ways we involve parents in their children’s learning. We welcome parents to help and support in class whether it is listening to individual readers or lead an activity and we greatly appreciate the valuable time they have given up. We host numerous events, workshops and invite parents to spend some time with us in class. Lastly but not least, communication is key. We keep parents informed about their children’s learning through newsletters, class stories and we always welcome parents to come and talk to our teachers and encourage an open dialogue.

Our children's best interest is always served when they have lots of people supporting them and all the pieces of their life fit together. A strong home-school partnership will set the stage for a child who will grow up to be ambitious in everything that they do.

Here are some more tips on becoming an active partner in your child’s learning:

Be sure to provide details about your child's home life to your teacher. Share any significant experiences, rituals or traditions.

On a weekly basis, plan family discussions on topics related to your child’s topic in school. You may even extend this to family days out or projects!

Get the entire family involved. As often as possible, try to participate in the many community events that are organised and bring a long other family members too.
