Year 7 Newsletter – 10th February 2017

Happy new year to you all, in this the Year of the Rooster! 2017 actually is the year of the fire rooster and anyone born this year is said to be trustworthy, with a strong sense of timekeeping and responsibility at work. Sometimes I think my students must all have been born in the year of the fire rooster as they display all these characteristics. They have settled straight into learning from the short break and are back to showing us the amazing work they do.

But before we see all of their highlights, I need to welcome Louise He who has joined 7C and comes from YKPao school in Shanghai. Louise’s arrival has been eagerly anticipated by her form who welcomed her with open arms. She has already settled into the school and has a great bunch of friends around her.

We also welcome back Miss Cuskin who travelled to Iceland over the holidays. Check out her tumblr blog https://nais-geography-trips.tumblr.com/ which has made me incredibly jealous – Iceland is definitely one for the bucket list. I have attached some photos from Pingvellir National Park in case you have difficulty in reading the blog.

On January 24th the students had a short Kung Fu lesson; a small demonstration followed by some practice themselves. They seemed to thoroughly enjoy it – please see the photos.

The form challenge is still underway with 7A still in the lead by only 8 points – come on 7B and 7C – see if you can win this term!

Reminder

Just a quick reminder to complete the parent survey that has been emailed out to you. Please follow this link in case you have missed the email. http://parentsurvey.nordanglia.com/survey/selfserve/5a0/160104?wave=y2017

The online form is accessible through a PC, MAC, tablet, or smartphone and should take no longer than 15 minutes to complete. Each family should respond only once on behalf of all your children.

We are constantly looking for ways to improve our school and your comments are integral this process. This annual survey will help us better understand what is working well for your child, along with any ways in which we can still improve further. Parental feedback is vital to helping us continuously provide the best possible education for your child.

Les Martinets Trekking Expedition - Switzerland June 2017

The trekking expedition is a ones in a lifetime adventure for your child enabling them to stretch their mental and physical limits in a safe and fun environment. Staying in the iconic Swiss countryside, the trip includes exploration of the beautiful Swiss Alps. Your child will develop skills such as leadership, self-reliance, risk taking, flexible thinking, organisation and motivation to give a sense of accomplishment. This is a trip specifically for Year 7 to Year 9 with all the necessary details attached below.

Student Reporters

These are from 7C this time, who have given us an insight into some of their lessons.

Garance Roule – Guidance

In Guidance we have been learning about different types of bullying and what you should do if it ever happens to you. It was interesting finding out about different experiences people have been through. I think it is a good topic because if something does bully us in the future we know how to deal with it and it can help to prevent bullying in our school.

Yigit Unal - Mandarin

In Mandarin we have been learning about hobbies and it was fun. It was a little hard because mandarin is complicated. Learning about hobbies was fun because we did lots of activities like acting the hobbies and the other person has to guess. We also played the card game where we had to raise the card up when the teacher sad the name. It was fun but hard.

Juliette Le Godec – History

We were doing a castle competition and learning about the features of a castle. Some of the features are: Drawbridge, crenellations, murder hole and so much more. We had to explain and made a model or draw or write an essay. I enjoyed making the castle.

Jisu Kim – Geography

In Geography, I really enjoyed working on our mini lessons in small groups, about plate boundaries. There are 3 basic types of plate boundaries. They are collision plate boundaries, constructive plate boundaries and conservative plate boundaries. We had 3 groups so that a group can work on one type of plate boundaries.

Angelina Nazarian – English

This week in English we have been doing poems. The poem that we are doing is The Highwayman, it is a very interesting poem and contains things like love and jealousy. I have found it very interesting to read and learn about it.

Karlijn Gabrielse – Science

In science we have been learning about forces. What I have enjoyed the most is making parachutes and throwing them off the balcony in C-Block. There are different kind of forces for example push pull and twist and we did some experiments. Here are some pictures of us making parachutes and our explanation of forces.

Coming up in the next newsletter will have student reporters from 7A. We look forward to reading their highlights.

Upcoming dates are:

24th Feb – STEAM Day 2

6th Mar – 17th Mar – Secondary Assessment Cycle 2

20th Mar – 24th Mar - School photos – more details to follow

King regards,

Paula Alderson
