Yoga in Nursery

Every day the Nursery children practise yoga, some days the children focus on their breathing and being mindful of how they breathe in and then release their breath. This practice allows the children time to slow down and concentrate on the simple act of breathing. Such deep breathing exercises are important, for when we take a deep breath our oxygen levels are raised.

This in turn helps to lower stress levels and enables us to become more calm, thus giving the children a simple coping mechanism for when they are feeling anxious. Yoga breathing techniques can be practised anyway, making it an easily usable calming tool both in and out of school.

As well as practising yoga breathing techniques, the Nursery children also enjoy practising yoga moves as they act out different stories. Practising yoga builds on many skills that are important to a child’s development.

Yoga poses use a range of muscles improving body coordination and encouraging motor development, as well as children thinking more deeply about the movements they are making and so strengthening mind and muscle connections.

Daily yoga can also help improve concentration which directly impacts the learning that takes place in the classroom. By using the whole body and thinking about their breath in each pose the Nursery children finish yoga feeling calm and happy.
