Year 4 Week Ahead Information

An overview of the week ahead in Year 4

  • Fantastic Fractions in Year 4

Information and Reminders

Reading books will be changed on a Monday and a Thursday. We have sent activities home with the children for you to try with them and their reading books. We are wanting Year 4 children to read at home at least 3 times a week. If you read with your child at home please mark inside their learning journals for their class teachers to see.

Homework is sent on Wednesdays and must be returned on Mondays to be marked. Please make sure you encourage your child to complete it on their own and inform us if they found the activity challenging so we can further support them in school. They can sign up for homework club on Thursdays and Fridays which is first come, first served.

Don’t forget to check Class Dojo to see how many House Points your child has been collecting and to see posts of what is happening in your child’s class.

As the weather turns colder please can you ensure that your children are wearing winter uniform and are bringing a coat to school with them.

Shakespeare Week is approaching, taking place the week beginning 20th March. On Friday 24th March, we will be having a Shakespeare Dress-Up Day, when students can dress up as a character from a Shakespeare play or Tudor dress.

English

In our English lessons next week we are going to be exploring the use of visual literacy. We are going to be using a mini-video called “Flight” (http://www.literacyshed.com/flight.html) to explore how visual stimuli can be turned into written form. The video is about a boy who wakes up one day and realises he can fly. During our English lessons we are going to be looking at writing from the view point of a character. We will begin the week on using pronouns for details and the use of first person. From here we will continue to develop our skills of being able to use a rich and varied vocabulary. Towards the end of the week we are going to be looking at writing a description of a character that can fly. In this piece of writing we will look at the importance of being able to vary our sentence types and the use of paragraphing.

Guided Reading: In our guided reading lessons next week we will ensure we understand what we read, and that we are able to draw inferences such as inferring characters' feelings, thoughts and motives from their actions, and justifying inferences with evidence.

Spelling:  During our spelling lessons next week we will be looking at using strategies for spelling homophones for example being able to understand when to use the spelling scene or seen.

Maths

During our maths lessons next week we are going to be starting our new topic of calculating shape. During this topic we begin by looking at being able to calculate the perimeter of a shape. Firstly, we will look at the perimeter of rectangles and then move onto rectilinear shapes. Towards the end of the week we will be looking at being able to calculate the area of a shape first by counting the squares followed by using known dimensions to calculate the shape using the known formula. From here we will challenge ourselves to be able to find the area of numerous rectilinear shapes.

Topic

In our topic of Gateways To The World next week we will be creating our own safety videos. We are going to be looking at what makes a good safety video, the importance of them and why we need to listen carefully to them. From here we will be writing our own scripts and recording them and creating iMovies. At the end of the week we will be having our “Gateways To The World” exit point. We hope lots of you can attend. Check out Class Dojo or email Miss Marshall for any additional information.
