Year 5 Week Ahead Information

An overview of the week ahead in Year 5

  • A great week of learning in Year 5

Information and Reminders

Thank you to all our parents for your support in ensuring our students wear the correct uniform to school.

Shakespeare Week is approaching, taking place the week beginning 20th March. On Friday 24th March, we will be having a Shakespeare Dress-Up Day, when students can dress up as a character from a Shakespeare play or Tudor dress.

During the week, each year group will be learning a particular Shakespeare play, which has been adapted for their understanding. The students will also take part in a range of different Shakespeare themed activities during the week.

5B were the winners of the primary challenge this week. We have been ensuring we use our manners every day especially when completing the lunch register each morning.

Stars of the Week

5A – Jenny - for always doing her homework and setting a great example for others

5B – Aleck – for focussing really well on his work and producing good quality outcomes

English

In English next week we intend to complete the book Pig-Heart Boy by Malorie Blackman. We will continue to develop our comprehension skills using the text, drawing out the main ideas of the story, as well as inferring characters’ feeling, thoughts and motives and justifying these using evidence from the text. Once we have finished the text we will write a review recommending the book to fellow students.

Spelling: Words containing the letter string ‘ough’

Maths

Next week in Maths we will continue to develop our calculating with fractions. We have added and subtracted fractions, but our focus moves to applying that learning to practical problem solving situations.

Topic

This week in topic, we will be finishing off our work on inherited characteristics. We will also be looking at how environmental factors affect the human body. As internationally minded citizens, we will explore the issues affecting global healthcare and look at charities which help to support epidemics in developing countries. At the end of the week, we will share our learning of this topic- ‘Being Human’ with younger children.
