Year 11 Newsletter – 14th April 2017

Year Group News

Almost There!

I cannot quite believe that this year has gone so fast and that this is my penultimate newsletter before the students begin their study leave! I continue to be very proud of the students’ work ethic and determination. Special mention this week goes to the Art students, who have just completed their two-day practical exam, and to the PE students, who have their practical assessment today, as well as to the students who have already completed or are about to complete their GCSE Language Speaking exams. I know they have all been working hard and getting nervous about these and wish them all the best.

Academic Awards Assembly

Before the break, the whole of the Secondary School had a special Awards Assembly led by Mr Parrish, celebrating academic achievement and underlining the need for hard work, dedication and ambition. As well as the presentation of awards, the students listened to speeches from two of our most successful Year 13s, Ashley Fung and Sammi Huang, as well as from the Principal, Mrs Wallace. I would like to congratulate all the Year 11 students who received academic awards: Amelia, Joydeep, Kajsa, Marcel, Pranav, Angela, Ethan, Georgie, Youjin, Hosang, Isabel, Naser and Giulia. Special congratulations also to Josi and Joseph who received the Head of Year Award for overall excellence, positivity, maturity and politeness.

Study and Revision: Good Habits

As I said in my previous newsletter, I would like to remind students that they need to keep focused and working in lessons right up until they go on study leave. Although they may feel that the time is approaching when they want to be revising independently, lesson activities and homework are all geared towards revision at this stage and students need to ensure that they are working to the best of their ability. Please encourage your child to make sensible choices at this time: they should be limiting screen time in the evenings, going to bed at a reasonable time, eating healthily and drinking lots of water. A student who is tired will not be able to learn effectively.

Study Leave

As the exam period approaches, the students begin to think about study leave and to ask questions about when it begins and how it will work. In the past we have found that it is much more beneficial for the students to attend school for as long as possible; in this way they are guaranteed the time and support of their teachers, both in and out of lessons. With this in mind, the last day before the start of study leave has been confirmed as Thursday 4th May. Up until this point, students are expected to attend school every day as normal; from Friday 5th May onwards, students are only required to attend school if they have an exam, although they may come to school if they wish to study in the library, or if they have been invited in for revision sessions. Further information to follow.

Year 11 Prom at Kathleen’s Waitan

After months of hard work by the Prom Committee, I am excited to announce that the Prom will take place at kathleen’s Waitan on Saturday 17th June. Kathleeen’s Waitan is a wonderful location with a fantastic view of the Bund, and I remember with fondness the wonderful evening we spent there with last year’s cohort. Please put the date in your diaries: further information will follow and tickets will become available very soon.
