Year 6 Week Ahead Information

An overview of the week ahead in Year 6

  • Year 6 trial of Harry Potter

Information and Reminders

Welcome back to the Summer Term, and after a rainy start to the week, it’s now starting to feel like winter is truly over! Summer uniform is now in place, so blazers may be kept at home.

We’ve started new units in all subjects – mock courtroom trials in English, calculating space in maths, and What a Wonderful World geography unit in Topic lessons. So far the children are enthusiastic and keen to know more.

We hope to announce some future events for parents soon. We’ll be conducting some courtroom trials which parents will be invited to sit in the public gallery and observe proceedings. More details to follow shortly.

English

In English, we will continue learning about the different jobs of professionals who work in a courtroom, and role-play some scripted trials to familiarise children with the procedures and formalities of the courtroom. We will continue our links with Year 1 classes by reading with the younger children in the library. Our SPAG topics are irregular past tenses and noun phrases.

Maths

In maths, we will continue calculating space and volume. Students will be able to calculate the area and volume of compound rectilinear shapes. They will learn how to recognise shapes which have the same area but different perimeters, and vice versa. We will be able to estimate the volume of cubes and cuboids, and calculate the volume thereafter. Students will also know a range of formulae to calculate these values. One common error we would like to avoid is forgetting to include the units of measure (cm, cm2, cm3, etc.)

Topic

We will continue our unit, ‘What a Wonderful World’, which is a geography-themed programme of study. We’ll be finding out about different biomes and environments around the world, and how plate tectonics affect life on Earth. We will also explore the forces and processes that shape our planet, and about extreme weather events.
