Message from the Year Leader
Firstly I would just like to say thank you for attending the Academic Review Evening last week. It was great to see you all and I hope you found it a productive opportunity to discuss your child’s progress this year. Secondly, the days of the newsletter are nearly at an end. We have launched the use of Class Dojo in the Secondary School. Class Dojo is already in use in Primary as well as Year 9 and has been used extremely successfully as means of communication. As parents, you will be able to keep up to date, daily, with things that have been happening in your child’s year group and class. Please do sign up so that you can see what's going on!

George, 8B for History
This week I'm history we did a debate of China v England over the drug opium. In the debate I was commissioner Lin and I was one of the leading emperors of the Chinese side. Overall Mr Guiney decided that the English side had a stronger argument and they won!
Minato, 8B for English
For the past few weeks in our English classes we have been learning how to mark and annotate advertisements. In our first lesson we did a fun short quiz about the brands we knew about. Later on we learnt many techniques that are used in these thousands of adverts that we see in our everyday lives. For example, there is star appeal. This is a type of technique that uses a famous political figure in the advert. Now our class can be given a random advert and can tell how effective the advert is. I really enjoyed whole lesson and I want to learn French even after I leave NAIS.
Rebecca, 8B for Maths
This week we wrote our maths test. It was good. It was about all the topics we have learned. Our new topic is Area and Circumferences of a circle. Everyone got it very fast. And it's not hard. It's about the pi and the radius and diameter, area and circumferences.
Abe, 8B for ICT
This ICT lesson, we were working on our animations in Flash. Our objective was to create a purposeful animation for a banner for a website. I'm making the idea for a knight in a castle but many people have a variety of different ideas. We use techniques such as shape tweening and keyframes in flash. We are doing this because we are using all the skills we learnt over the past few weeks to create a successful animation. So far, we are progressing well and well on the path of completing it in the next few weeks.
Yvonne, 8B for ART
During art lately, we have been copying images of flowers onto black paper using oil pastels in order to prepare for our next project.
This task included skills we have practised before -- Observational drawing, and, they were exceptionally hard if you wanted to achieve something looking really realistic. This task needed a lot of patience and persistence, where you have to keep adding layers upon layers of oil pastel until the colour is thick enough to leave no gaps behind. Choosing colours were a crucial part of this piece too -- After all, using the wrong colours would provide a completely different feel to the piece and we probably do not want that as an observational drawing because we want it as close to the reference as possible.
This task allowed us to prepare for an upcoming project that included making a sculpture shaped like a plant or flower.
As for homework, we have been set to look up this significantly famous American artist, well known for her art about, of course, flowers. Her name is Georgia O'Keeffe and we were all asked to make an artist research page about her in our sketchbooks.
