Information and Reminders
Next week is the Primary FOBISIA Games, where schools from across Asia will be visiting our school for the Under-11’s Tournament. This will mean that there is no PE lesson for Year 5 on Friday 19th May.
Thursday 18th May is Primary STEAM day, with a focus on recycling. Please could you send in any recyclable materials (bottles, boxes, packaging, etc.) to your child’s class teacher before Thursday. There will also be no Mandarin lesson that day.
As the warm weather seems to have arrived for good, please make sure your child is dressed correctly for school. Summer uniform should be worn, and students should bring their water bottle and their hat every day.

In English, the children will begin reading ‘Moonshot’, a fictive take on the real events of the 1969 moon landing. We will start by reading extracts from the text as a way of consolidating and developing skills in editing texts for spelling and grammar. We will also be using rocket-themed poetry as a means to practise our skills using parenthesis, and will retrieve information from more formal non-fiction texts about the moon landing. Finally, we will work on cohesive devices and structuring our ideas, as we write a letter to or from an astronaut.
Focus: Cohesive devices; editing for spelling, grammar and punctuation errors; indicating parenthesis; retrieving information from non-fiction texts.
In Mathematics, we will continue looking at Data Presentation, with a particular focus on line graphs. We will be revising how to interpret information given in a line graph, and answering questions that are subject to both subjective interpretation, and those which require the statistician to calculate the mean. We will consequently also be looking at averages, finding out about the different types of average and how to find them.
Key vocabulary: average, mean, median, mode.
In topic, the children will complete their Exit Point before moving on to the Entry Point for our new topic – Space Explorers. At the beginning of the week, we will have our Entry Point, which will involve sending supplies from Earth to the International Space Station. We will also have the Knowledge Harvest, this is an opportunity for the children to share what they already know about astronomy and what they want to find out. At the end of the week, the children will be investigating the size of the Earth, Sun and Moon.
