Year 12 FOBISIA Primary Games Marshalling

As you know last week NAIS Pudong were the hosts of the Primary FOBISIA Games with schools visiting from across China and Asia. As well as being a huge honour for the school and a really exciting few days for our primary age students, the FOBISIA games represent an enormous feat of organization and planning. Our Year 12 students joined PE teachers and other staff at the stadium for the athletics on Thursday morning and showed exactly why we are willing to trust our IB students in high profile roles. As well as some very efficient and effective marshalling of the events, staff from NAIS and other schools commented on the support that our Year 12 team gave to the young competitors from all of the schools and of the energy and enthusiasm that they brought to their roles. The PE department said that the event could not have run without the input of the Year 12s and we are enormously proud of their contribution.  Thank you to all Year 12 students; special mention must go to Bryan, Hannah, Phoebe and MK who continued into the afternoon by marshalling the swimming.

Year 13 Cap and Gown

Our final formal event in school with Year 13 took place last Friday evening. Many students had been able to relax for a week after their IB examinations had concluded; a few brave souls had been in the exam hall on the morning of the event finishing their final French paper. We gathered first in the IB Workroom to make sure that all looked magnificent in their gowns and mortar boards and then processed to the auditorium passing the FOBISIA students, staff and parents who stopped what they were doing to applaud. Once settled in the auditorium a wonderful evening followed with short speeches on each of our graduating students as well. Ashley and Seb made sure that there were no dry eyes in the room: both of their speeches packed a real emotional punch. The evening concluded with drinks and canapes before the students left for an evening of celebration in Puxi. Well done and thank you to all who were involved in a wonderful evening.

Year 13 Prom

We are all looking forward to a lovely night on Friday as the final celebration of Year 13 graduation. After their final assembly, examinations and the Cap and Gown Graduation ceremony last week, this may well be the last time that this group of students will all gather together before moving on to holidays and higher education. Staff, students and parents will gather for dinner, drinks, dancing, speeches and probably a few tears at Kathleen’s Waitan.

Year 12 Assessment Cycle 3

With Year 13 examinations now in the past, the focus moves to our Year 12s who, along with students in other year groups, are now in the process of completing their end of year exams. These are important examinations not only because of the practice and experience that they offer but also as the results will inform the predictions made by subject teachers for higher education applications. As well as the subject exams, students will also complete a formal TOK practice essay which will be formally assessed; this is excellent experience in preparation for the TOK essay that must be completed for the final assessment next year.

Once the assessment cycle is complete, students in Year 12 will be looking forward to an exciting and important final two weeks of term. For the final two weeks of the academic year we change the Year 12 timetable to allow both a “Core Focus Week” and a week in which students work on the Group 4 Project. This is crucial curriculum time and it is imperative that students attend and complete the activities as they form part of the requirements for the IB Diploma.

Group 4 Project

This is a collaborative scientific investigation that the students will conduct in teams with the support of staff. It is based around very practical and hands-on enquiry skills and culminates in a presentation of findings to staff and visitors. It is a part of the course which students find both challenging and enjoyable and which develops skills crucial across a wide range of subjects. It is also a compulsory part of the course.

Year 12 Core Focus

This week will give students an extended period of time in which to consolidate their planning for the Extended Essay and to plan and prepare for the research and writing which must be done over the summer break. Students will be supported in refining their research skills so that they are ready to conduct the in depth research and evaluation demanded by this component of the IB Diploma. We will also run sessions around the assessment criteria so that they can formulate their success criteria for the essay. A CAS day will see students reflecting on the year and using these reflections to formulate their planning for next year. Students will also prepare and deliver a formal TOK presentation which will be formally assessed giving opportunities to both prepare and to have feedback. Of course staff also have one or two little fun team-builders up  our sleeves. Detailed timetable will follow!
