Year 13 Prom

This year’s “Prom” took place last Friday at Kathleen’s Waitan. It was an absolute delight to gather with students, parents and staff for an evening of great food and drink, wonderful speeches, great views across the river and some impressive dancing! Do please enjoy the photos which can be viewed at the links below:

Year 12 Assessment Cycle 3

Yea 12 students have now reached the end of the third and final assessment cycle of the year and should have submitted a formal Theory of Knowledge practice essay which will be formally assessed.  These examinations have given practice and experience to our students and the results will inform the predictions made by subject teachers for higher education applications. Students will now receive feedback and follow up from subject staff to allow them to maximize their learning from the experience.

Once examination feedback is complete, students in Year 12 will begin an exciting and important final two weeks of term. For the final two weeks of the academic year we change the Year 12 timetable to allow both a “Core Focus Week” and a week in which students work on the Group 4 Project. This is crucial curriculum time and it is imperative that students attend and complete the activities as they form part of the requirements for the IB Diploma.

Group 4 Project

This is a collaborative scientific investigation that the students will conduct in teams with the support of staff. It is based around very practical and hands-on enquiry skills and culminates in a presentation of findings to staff and visitors. It is a part of the course which students find both challenging and enjoyable and which develops skills crucial across a wide range of subjects. It is also a compulsory part of the course.

Year 12 Core Focus

This week will give students an extended period of time in which to consolidate their planning for the Extended Essay and to plan and prepare for the research and writing which must be done over the summer break. Students will be supported in refining their research skills so that they are ready to conduct the in depth research and evaluation demanded by this component of the IB Diploma. We will also run sessions around the assessment criteria so that they can formulate their success criteria for the essay. A CAS day will see students reflecting on the year and using these reflections to formulate their planning for next year. Students will also prepare and deliver a formal TOK presentation which will be formally assessed giving opportunities to both prepare and to have feedback. The week will include a higher education day where students open their UCAS and Studielink accounts as well as creating the first draft of their personal statement/letter of motivation. On the same day there will be a US focus day with A-List Education who will help those applying to the US create the first draft of their college essay. An exciting feature of the Core Focus this year is that Year 12 students, led by our Model United Nations team will lead an entire day of collaboration with younger students. This day will follow a simplified version of the Model United Nations and will introduce students in Years 7-9 to a range of global issues as well as the way in which an MUN is run and organized. This will represent a real challenge to our Year 12s but we know, from the experience of their outstanding contribution to FOBISIA last month, that they have the skills and commitment to make it a great success.

Dress Code

We believe that the NAIS Pudong dress code is very important for the whole school community. Excellent standards of dress reflect excellent standards in all areas of school life. We expect students to take pride in their appearance. In IB students are permitted to dress as adults would in a professional environment that is smart business attire. Unsupervised access to the school premises

A reminder that students cannot be allowed to remain on site without the appropriate adult supervision, as this can pose a Health and Safety risk. Therefore students will be allowed to use the IB Academy in the afternoons until no later than 5:30pm. After this time students will be asked to leave the site by teaching and security staff. Students will only be allowed to remain on site after this time with the express permission and under the direct supervision of a member of staff.

This also applies to weekends. Students will only be allowed on site for revision, extra lessons, sporting fixtures and the like, under direct appropriate supervision. To this end the security staff will be made aware of who is allowed on site outside of regular school hours.

We would very much appreciate your support in this matter.
