A word from the Year Leader

As the temperatures soar our Year 9 students are steaming ahead through to the end of term. With Assessment cycle 3 complete I have received so many wonderful comments about the mature attitude the students have displayed as they prepared for and completed their end of year exams. It can be a little daunting sitting in our huge exam venue but all these experiences help prepare our students for the future when they will complete either GCSE or IB.

Yesterday we saw the end of House Awards assembly and as usual the students did themselves proud!! So many Bronze, Silver and Gold winners who picked up a certificate and a prize. A special congratulations to the Platinum winners – Alessandra, Hannah, Ceon and Sophie.  Also congratulations to everyone in De House who were the overall winners this year. They will enjoy a trip to the cinema before the end of term.

Collaboration Week

The last week of term see some exciting opportunities for our students. Year 9 will be supporting with Sports Day as leaders for the younger students. There will also be a performance day, STEAM day, Sports day and a final assembly. More information to follow.

Summer Fun Day

Unfortunately due to weather conditions the Summer Fun Day planned for tomorrow is postponed to next term. The weather is due to thunder and rain tomorrow so for health and safety reasons the event won’t go ahead. I would like to thank all of the students for their kind offer of their time. Many of the students volunteered to support the event by face painting, painting nails and working on the games tent. All of the raffle tickets and Tombola prizes will roll over to the event in September.

HISTORY

Today 9B researched the My Lai incident and carefully selected evidence to decide whether they felt William Calley was a war criminal or a scapegoat. I'm looking forward to see how they debate this next Thursday.

GERMAN

For our cultural project, we learned about the rise and fall of the Berlin Wall. Students were interested in learning some of Germany's important history and they were very moved by yhe escape stories. They are now putting together their findings which will be displayed around the Global Languages area for others to learn from.

MATHS

End of year assessments are over, giving us time in mathematics to focus on developing logical/analytic skills. Year 9 were given this classic problem: is it possible to place 8 queens on a chess board so that no two queens are attacking each other. One solution is shown, but there are many more.

Of course mathematics is interested in general solutions, so as an extra challenge the class attempted to figure out if it's always possible to place n queens on an n x n chess board
