Charities we Support

Our school has strong links within the local community, taking every opportunity help to improve the the lives of those less fortunate through charitable fundraising and activities.

Our Community Group has identified key charities to be beneficiaries of money raised throughout the year through major events and student fundraising activities. The main charities are:

Shanghai Sunrise – Since its beginning in 1995, Shanghai Sunrise has helped thousands of disadvantaged high school and university students in Shanghai to complete their education. We have, over the past several years, sponsored 17 students annually through Shanghai Sunrise with 100 percent of sponsorships going to the students.

Local Orphanage – Community Group volunteers support the HuiXin orphanage both financially and through weekly visits. Each week, the Community Group purchases protein-rich foods to supplement the diets of the orphans, working with the orphanage to ensure the food is suitable and useful. A group of accredited volunteers makes weekly visits, playing with the young children and assisting with feeding, and the Community Group has also financed significant facility and equipment upgrades.

Heart to Heart - This non-profit, volunteer-run charity assists impoverished families from around China whose children require heart surgery. Working with two local Shanghai hospitals, it also assists with playroom volunteers and donating school libraries in poor rural areas. Each heart surgery costs 25,000RMB and in 2015 our school community financed two of these surgeries.

Baobei Foundation - The Baobei Foundation works with Shanghai medical professionals to provide life-saving neurological or gastrointestinal surgeries to Chinese orphans. It also supports the babies with transportation and day-to-day care following surgery.

Any funds raised in excess of the amounts pledged to these charities are distributed to other worthy causes throughout the year.

Students at our school are encouraged and guided to make a difference in the local community and further afield. The Student Council, as well as individual students and year groups, undertake a range of charitable activities. These include:

  • Holding bake sales and other fundraising events for charity, including house activities such as the Jiao Challenge
  • Teaching English at the local migrant school as part of our programme of co-curricular activities
  • Running regular activities, including basketball and art, on campus for migrant school students
  • Undertaking service activities as part of Project Week trips from Year 6 through to Year 12. These trips take students to remote parts of China to help with projects in schools and communities in need and may include painting classrooms, setting up libraries or teaching English.
