English as an Additional Language (EAL)

Your child can excel in an English language environment after completing our fast track EAL integration programme. Students for whom English is a second or even third language will find an open and supportive team of professionals and peers to get them up to speed in no time.

EAL at NAIS Pudong – an overview

EAL has a superb reputation at NAIS Pudong. On top of teaching our students high levels of functional English very quickly, we are also a Cambridge International Language Examination Centre and offer these examinations to all students on our programme from Year 3 to Year 13. In June 2016, 38 students from Year 3 to Year 11 undertook these examinations and achieved excellent results. All students are now Cambridge certificated. These are world recognised qualifications that acknowledge and celebrate excellence in achievement.

In EAL we educate the whole person. We understand that in order to learn, students must feel confident, secure and able to express themselves.

So, we begin by providing our English survival toolkit providing our students with the framework they need so they can start to enjoy our curriculum, as soon as possible.

The EAL programme

Our support in is in two strands: the first is withdrawal from some classes for beginners which forms our ‘accelerated English’ programme; the second is intervention. Intervention takes place in a number of ways, such as in-class support and small group alternative classes for a more language focussed approach. We tailor our programmes for the needs of our students and are proud to be flexible in our approach.

Focus on skills

Once students have basic survival English we focus on the four skill areas – reading, writing, speaking and listening. Teaching takes the form of inquiry based classroom activity, role play, games based learning and more traditional explicit grammar teaching. Our goal is to provide our students with high levels of academic fluidity in their use of English. We ensure that our EAL curriculum aligns with that of our mainstream colleagues. Indeed, all teachers at NAIS Pudong have had EAL training that they use in their daily teaching.

Native languages and cultural diversity

Culture reflects language just as languages reflect culture and we are proud of our diversity.

We recognise the importance of Native languages and the rich ‘funds of knowledge’ that they bring. We know that students who excel in their first language do very well when they learn English and so we encourage our students to continue striving for excellence in this area.

Our EAL Community and Parent EAL classes

Our EAL community stretches beyond our student body. We have established an English language course of study for our parents and are delighted to report that in June 2016 our first ever Parent Cambridge University Language Examination class concluded with our parents achieving very highly in these examinations.
