Individual Instrument Lessons & ABRSM

Frequently asked questions about our Instrumental and Voice lessons

How do I sign up?

You can download an application form at the bottom of this page. Fill in the form and hand this into the Finance Office in B Block with the full fee amount. Once this has been received, you will then receive an email confirming your lessons. Please note: you may not sign up simply by emailing a music instructor—the form must be filled in with the fees and delivered to the school.

How do I request a certain instructor?

If you have lessons in the past and you would like to keep lessons with the same instructor, please write the instructors name on top of the form.

How/where do I find out my lesson times?

There are three ways in which you can have access to the timetable of lesson times.

• Timetables are posted in the Performing Arts Centre music hallway on the first level.

• Timetables are given to each student’s classroom teacher for years 1-6.

• Timetables are emailed to you personally by your child’s private instrument or voice instructor.

What is my child learning?

All instructors use the newly developed Home Exercise Journal, which is filled out weekly by the instructor. Within the booklet, the student has specific exercises written, as well as an area for the document to be signed by parents to check off the amount of practise that has happened during the week.

ABRSM

We are a Certified ABRSM Registration Centre. For more information about the ABRSM, please contact the Music Department.

How many lessons are there each year?

There are 9-11 lessons each term. This may change depending on the holidays.

How much are the lessons?

Lessons are 190RMB per 30 minute individual lesson.

How do I pay for lessons/get a refund/request a receipt?

All monies for music lessons is dealt with by the Finance Office in Building B.

How long are the lessons?

Each lesson is 30 minutes long.

Do I need to buy my own instrument?

Depending on the instrument, you may be able to borrow a school instrument for up to two terms. You will then be requested by the Music Department to supply your own should your child decide to continue with lessons. Instruments NOT supplied by the school are: Drums, Guitar, Piano. Those instruments may only be used during the day in which a lesson takes place. To learn about where a proper instrument can be purchased, contact the Head of Music for advice.

Where can I buy an instrument or music?

There are many local places in Shanghai to buy instruments and music. Most of these stored can be found on Jin Ling Dong Lu next to People’s Square in Puxi. Specific stores with English speaking staff are:

  • Best Friend Music – Jin Ling Dong Lu
  • Parsons Music – Jin Ling Dong Lu or Thumb Plaza
  • Sheet Music – Shanghai Tiantian Art Music Store – 20 Fen Yang Road
