Our British primary curriculum
At BIS Abu Dhabi, our primary students follow the English National Curriculum. Their learning progresses through two stages.
Key Stage 1 (Years 1 and 2)
Our Key Stage 1 curriculum builds on the foundations laid by our early years programme. Specialist teaching in core subjects develops vital reading, writing and maths skills, while exciting trips, projects, themed weeks, and outdoor adventures will cultivate your child’s creative, social, and physical skills.
Through our phonics-based reading and writing approach, students learn to recognise and read sounds, and then blend them together to form words. We teach maths in a purposeful, practical way, using play and exploration. Hands-on activities – both in the classroom and outdoors – engage our children in a wide range of subjects.
Your child’s physical development is really important, too, and our students swim, dance, and enjoy gymnastics and team games.
Key Stage 2 (Years 3 and 4)
At Key Stage 2, your child will focus more on specialist subject areas, including English, maths, science, ICT, music, drama, humanities, art, languages, and PE. These are delivered in different and exciting ways, including fully immersive educational experiences. Your child might spend the day as a Roman or an Egyptian, learn about the experiences of a refugee, or cook up a delicious meal.
Our young scientists use state-of-the-art equipment in our specialist learning labs, while our mathematicians enter local and international competitions. As part of our exclusive collaboration with The Juilliard School, specialist artists, musicians and performers nurture our students’ creative growth.
Learning takes place in a supportive environment where our children are challenged to try new things and take risks, which builds their confidence and resilience.
