Every learner has the power to shape a better tomorrow. Education is more than academics, it’s about preparing students to lead with confidence, compassion, and purpose in a fast-changing world. Through our Nord Anglia Education global partnership with UNICEF, we empower students to take meaningful action on the United Nations Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs) and the Convention on the Rights of the Child (UNCRC), turning ideas into impact and creating futures filled with possibility. Through initiatives like the Student Summit, learners explore two SDGs each year, deepening their understanding of global issues and their role in shaping a better future.
Central to this mission is the Social Impact Distinction (SID) Programme, modelled on UNICEF UK’s Rights Respecting Schools. SID celebrates schools that embed children’s rights, equality, diversity, inclusion, and belonging (EDIB) into their culture. Schools earn Bronze, Silver, or Gold distinctions based on three strands:

To turn ideas into impact, Nord Anglia offers Social Impact Grants, a $500,000 annual fund for student-led projects that make a real difference. These grants support initiatives addressing healthcare access, climate change, inclusive education, digital literacy, and equity. By backing student creativity with resources, Nord Anglia ensures that social impact is not just a concept but a lived experience.
At BIS Abu Dhabi, this global mission translates into meaningful local impact. Our students actively engage in initiatives that reflect SID strands and bring the SDGs to life.
Senior school students are leading a sustainability CCA and intend to apply for a social impact grant to establish a community greenhouse. Social Impact students are preparing activities for World Children’s Day, while others collaborate with TASS, the Alliance for Sustainable Schools in the Middle East, on projects like Uniform Switch Day and the Sustainable Schools Initiative, helping deepen children’s understanding of sustainability.
Student voice and belonging are at the heart of our school culture. Through House Days, Earth Day, World Children’s Day, and Debating CCAs, and our work on EDIB, students explore themes of dignity, equality, and respect. Teachers make meaningful connections between the curriculum and the SDGs and UNCRC, giving learners opportunities to question, reflect, and act.
This commitment extends beyond the classroom through initiatives like the BISAD Diploma, which encourages students to demonstrate our core values of honesty, kindness, and respect by helping others and contributing to the community, whether supporting a local charity, mentoring younger students, or suggesting ways to make our school more sustainable.
Older students also have the option to participate in the Duke of Edinburgh Award from Years 9 to 13, developing resilience, leadership, and service through volunteering, skills, and adventurous challenges.
For those pursuing the International Baccalaureate Diploma Programme (IBDP), the Creativity, Activity, Service (CAS) component ensures that service learning remains central, empowering students to take meaningful action and reflect on their impact.
Together, these experiences build character and leadership, preparing students to make a difference locally and globally.
From Year 4’s Sustainable Cities project to Year 2s Identity topic exploring the UAE and the Rainforest, our students learn how global challenges connect to their everyday lives. This foundation prepares them to take informed action. Secondary students contribute through initiatives like GRASSROOT FEST, organised by the Sustainability and Leadership CCA in collaboration with the Band CCA to raise awareness and funds for biodiversity projects (for example introducing more plant life into our school buildings). These efforts show how creativity and leadership combine to create real impact.
Our students participate in World Children’s Day and Earth Day, attend the Nord Anglia Student Summit with UNICEF, volunteer through our Tanzania initiative, and fundraise for the Al Jalila Foundation during Pinktober. These experiences empower them to lead with purpose and compassion, making a difference both in Abu Dhabi and beyond.
