Finding Your Why: A BIS Abu Dhabi Approach to Student Wellbeing

A BIS Abu Dhabi Approach to Student Wellbeing
A BIS Abu Dhabi Approach to Student Wellbeing

Wellbeing is more than a state of mind, it is the foundation for success and personal growth. In today’s world, young people face increasing pressures, from academic expectations to social challenges and constant change. Helping students discover their “why”, the sense of purpose that drives resilience, confidence, and motivation, is central to creating a positive learning environment across both Primary and Secondary School.

Why Purpose Matters

Students today face challenges that can feel as demanding as a marathon: exams, friendships, growing expectations, and constant change. Whether they are in FS or Year 13, a clear sense of purpose helps them navigate these experiences with confidence and optimism.

Research shows that when students understand why they are doing something, they:

  • Experience less stress during exam period
  • Show stronger resilience and motivation
  • Feel more confident and capable
  • Develop healthier wellbeing overall

Purpose gives direction. It transforms obstacles into opportunities and helps students see progress as part of a bigger picture.

A BIS Abu Dhabi Approach to Student Wellbeing

Our Approach: Supporting Students to Find Their Why

We cannot give students their purpose, but we can create the conditions for them to discover it. At BIS Abu Dhabi, this means providing tools, environments, and relationships that encourage reflection and growth throughout every phase of their schooling.

Reflection and Self-Awareness

In Primary, reflection begins with simple, meaningful moments, class time discussions, values-led assemblies, and guided conversations that help younger children explore what they enjoy, what matters to them, and how they feel.

In Secondary, students build on these foundations through tutor-time activities, assemblies, and classroom discussions that deepen their understanding of their goals, values, and motivations. They move beyond task completion to a stronger sense of direction and identity.

Skills for Life

Across all age groups, we teach practical skills that underpin wellbeing: emotional regulation, time management, growth mindset, positive coping strategies, and problem-solving. These skills help students manage challenges with increasing independence and confidence.

Supportive Relationships and Belonging

Wellbeing thrives in a community where every child feels safe, known, and valued.

In Primary, relationships and belonging are central. Children learn best when they trust their teachers, feel part of their class community, and form positive friendships. These early experiences build the emotional foundations that shape resilience and self-belief.

In Secondary, relationships continue to matter deeply. Our network of Mental Health First Aiders, caring tutors, subject teachers, and student leaders create an environment where every young person feels understood and supported.

A strong sense of belonging, feeling “this is my place and these are my people”, is one of the most powerful drivers of purpose.

Opportunities to Lead and Contribute

From Primary helping roles to Secondary Ambassador positions, students are given opportunities to take responsibility and make a difference.

Student-led initiatives, from World Children’s Day activities to Anti-Bullying Week and CAS cafés, allow students to see the impact of their actions. Contributing to the community strengthens purpose and pride.

Celebrating Progress

Our Achievement Moment Policy recognises effort, improvement, and positive behaviour. In both Primary and Secondary, celebrating growth reinforces motivation and strengthens wellbeing.

The Importance of Parents and Partnership

Purpose does not develop in school alone. Parents play a vital role in shaping children’s motivation, confidence, and sense of direction.

Through conversations at home, encouragement, and consistent routines, parents help children understand their strengths and passions. When school and home work together, sharing the same messages of resilience, belonging, and purpose, students flourish.

Practical Tips

Encourage your child to reflect on these questions:

  • What motivates me?
  • What helps me keep going when things get tough?
  • What am I working toward?
These questions work for all ages and help build purposeful thinking over time.
