Over the weekend of May 14th-15th, the British International School of Houston hosted Nord Anglia Americas’ inaugural Regional Round of the World Scholar’s Cup.

This event saw 120 Scholars from six different schools in the state of Texas gather to compete in the four WSC rounds of Team Debate, Scholar’s Challenge, Collaborative Writing and the Scholar’s Bowl. Additional to that, the always entertaining Scholar’s Show showcased our Bulldogs’ talents ranging from stand-up comedy, to card tricks, from a ‘Hamlet’ soliloquy to cup stacking, from stand-up comedy WHILE solving a Rubik’s cube to a fresh take on the ‘Romeo and Juliet’ balcony scene!

BIS Houston students had been preparing over the course of the year during Enrichment and CCA sessions, and this weekend saw their engagement, ambition and teamwork result in all our Teams from both the Junior and Senior divisions qualifying for the Global Round. This is an amazing accomplishment, and we are incredibly proud of our Scholars who took part as well as our teachers and parents who supported the programme.

Here are some comments from our parents following the weekend:

The experience of preparing for and participating in the World Scholar’s Cup was transformational for my daughter. She loved the coaching sessions at school; being mentored by older students and staff to learn about the art/science of debating and learning how to make and prove a point in an impactful way has built her confidence along with her public speaking skills. The weekend of the WSC was PHENOMENAL! Qualifying for the Global Round of the WSC was, according to my daughter, ‘The most amazing thing that I’ve achieved.’

This has been a great weekend and we are so proud of all our BIS Houston participants. My daughter had an amazing time, and it was wonderful to see her so confident and so happy. She really pushed herself out of her comfort zone and has benefited so much - thank you! So many smiles left the building on Sunday and so many skills gained along the way. What a wonderful experience for our lucky children.
