High School Math

Josh Huskisson (Grade 9), Anthony Khoo (Grade 11) and Xing Li, Oliver Li and Sungjin Lee (Grade 10) received their medals for their respective contests for the Canadian Mathematics Competition. The medals are for the best score within the school, providing they are in the top 25% worldwide. That is why there are 3 medals for Grade 10 as all 3 competitors obtained the same mark.

Grades 7 and 8 are taking part in the Gauss competition from the 17th May. Further information and past papers at http://www.cemc.uwaterloo.ca/contests/contests.html .

For High School mathematics students have moved from work on geometry onto functions and now onto statistics and probability.

In geometry Grade 9 worked out the height of the tower over the gym using trigonometry, whist Grade 10 constructed pyramids and calculated angles and lengths in their 3 dimensional shapes.

For functions Grade 9 looked at the formula for a circle and a parabola whilst Grade 10 worked out the minimum icing required for a cake with the help of some differential calculus.

Grade 11 have started work on probability, conditional probability and are moving onto Baye’s Theorem which helps us with the scientific method.
