Our overseas British Vietnamese International School staff have just returned after celebrating the calendar new year. We are now immediately getting ready for the Vietnamese Lunar New Year. For those of us who have celebrated it before, we know some of what to expect. Families will be visited, debts settled, roads busy with people carrying out their preparations. Huge colourful Tet trees will dwarf the motorbikes carrying them. It is such an exciting, vibrant and busy time of year. We must thank you for attending many of the class and school events that have, and will, take place over these few short weeks before Tet. For our new staff, Tet will be a new learning experience, discovering an aspect of a different culture. Over the next few weeks, our expat staff will become more internationally-minded. We can’t wait to share this celebration with you and look forward to seeing you all on Sunday at our Tet Fayre.
At the start of any new term, it is time for new beginnings, and each year group has started a new International Primary Curriculum (IPC) topic. You are used to attending our exit points to showcase the children’s learning and progress over the course of a topic but our entry points are just as important. These are the moments that inspire the children, the time when their enquiry skills are refined, without them realizing! They are just so interested in the topics and have so many questions to ask. After these sessions, the year groups complete a ‘knowledge harvest’, where the teacher learns what the children already know about the topic. The future learning can then be even more personalised for the classes and individuals so their knowledge, skills and understanding are nurtured and accelerated.
Year 1 started their topic of celebrations with a New Year’s Eve party and Year 2 enjoyed climbing into Mr Sayer’s car, riding various bikes and sitting in the school bus as their topic on transport started. You can see photos and videos of these events on the year group Facebook page. If you have not yet had your invite, please do be patient as we have to invite each parent individually with more than 500 e-mail addresses to add.
Have a great weekend and we hope to see you all on Sunday.
Mr Nicholas West – Head of Primary
