Secondary Weekly Update 22/02/2019 from Mr. Nick Lee

“I want to be someone who stands out from the crowd and does something” Nguyen Ngoc Ha Nguyen.

This week saw one of those wonderful moments that we have in BVIS this week that makes me so proud of the work we are all doing here. For the third year running we have opened up applications to those students in Years 11 and 12 to become the BVIS UN Ambassadors, to represent our community at the United Nations from 11th -17th July in New York City. Once again, the ambassadors will be presenting their views to the UN high level political forum.

Our four shortlisted applicants each spoke to the school in assemblies this week, presenting their views on what the UN Sustainable Development Goals means to them.

Nguyen Ngoc Ha Nguyen, Kim Yeonoo, Duong Thi Bich Ngoc and Pham Thu Phuong all spoke with knowledge, concern and empathy about the development goals that mean the most to them and why they should be chosen to be the ambassadors of the school. They were simply wonderful and below are a few quotes from them that really made me sit up and think.

"Why does discrimination still prevail in today's world? Why is a culture of minority-exclusion forged?” Kim Yeonoo

“I'm interested in Goal 1, 'no poverty' in particular, because I believe that it's the key to unlocking and advancing the other 16 goals” Duong Thi Bich Ngoc

“As a female student, I want to stand out and change the way of thinking which can help reduce inequality. I think the most effective way is to invest in education.” Pham Thu Phuong

All four of these students have demonstrated that they are passionate about the issues that affect our planet, and that they have the get up and go to actually do something about it. I congratulate all of them for their courage.

Unfortunately, we have only got a two confirmed places for this incredible trip and we will be announcing who this year's BVIS ambassadors will be very soon.

I hope you all have a great week ahead.
