What is a Passion Project and why do the Year 6 students at Léman participate in this?

A passion project is an important initiative for Year 6 students as they transition into Year 7. This project allows students to explore their interests and pursue a topic that they are passionate about. This process builds independence and prepares them for the increased responsibilities they will face in Year 7. The passion project also aligns with the Middle Years Programme, Approaches to Learning skills, which encourages students to be self-directed learners and to develop critical thinking, research, and communication skills. Therefore, the passion project serves as an excellent platform for Year 6 students to develop their academic and personal skills, helping them with their transition into the secondary school.

How does this work?

Once students have chosen a theme and skill that interests them, they create an action plan outlining the steps they need to take on a weekly basis to complete their project. This plan serves as a roadmap, helping students stay on track and make progress towards their goals. However, as students work on their passion project, they may encounter challenges or obstacles that require them to be adaptable. For example, they may need to adjust their action plan if they encounter unexpected difficulties or if they discover new information that changes their approach. By learning to adapt to changing circumstances, students develop important problem-solving skills that will serve them well during secondary school.

What do they need to do?

The passion project for Year 6 students culminates in the creation of a PowerPoint presentation that showcases their progress and the skills they have developed. Students use their time at home to work on their project, and then come to school to document their progress through the creation of their PowerPoint. In their PowerPoint presentation, students include pictures of their work and write a reflection on their progress and the skills they have developed. Additionally, they identify which A.T.L skills they used throughout the week, this will help them understand the A.T.L skills better before they move to the secondary school and use these skills. By reflecting on their progress and the skills they have developed, students gain a deeper understanding of their strengths and areas for improvement. This process also helps students to take ownership of their learning and to develop a growth mindset that will serve them well in the future.

How do they present their learning?

Finally, the students participate in a passion project fair. At this fair, students have the opportunity to showcase what they have learnt and present their project to their parents and peers. This event provides a platform for students to share their work, discuss their process, and reflect on their learning journey. Through this experience, students build confidence in their abilities and develop important communication skills. They learn how to articulate their ideas clearly and to respond to questions and feedback from others. Additionally, the passion project fair fosters a sense of community and collaboration, as students support and learn from one another. This event is an exciting and meaningful way for Year 6 students to celebrate their achievements and to share their passion and enthusiasm with others.
