THE FIRST STEP INTO THE WORLD BEYOND

THE FIRST STEP INTO THE WORLD BEYOND - THE FIRST STEP INTO THE WORLD BEYOND

There is something special about the first days of a new Arts ensemble.

They aren’t polished yet. Students are still learning names, finding their places, figuring out how the group works, and discovering what will be expected of them. There may be some nerves. There may even be a little chaos.

But look closely, and something exciting is already happening.

Across Léman, students have been taking their first steps this year with Primary Choir, Primary Strings, Secondary Contemporary Choir, and the cast of our Secondary production, The Little Mermaid JR.

In these first rehearsals, students are highly engaged and switched on — watching, listening, experimenting, and beginning to discover where they fit.

And that process matters.

Joining an Arts ensemble connects a student to something bigger than themselves. A choir needs every voice. An orchestra depends upon its musicians listening and responding to one another. A theatrical production simply cannot exist without actors, musicians, technicians, and creatives working toward the same goal.

In an ensemble, students discover that what they do matters — but also that what everyone around them does matters too.

This is ensembleship: learning to listen, respond, support, lead, follow, and create together.

It is also an opportunity for students to discover that they are capable of more than they may have imagined. They are surrounded by other young people who have made a choice: to show up, work together, and pursue excellence in something they care about.

Our ambitions for them are high.

As these groups develop throughout the year, we want to see growing confidence and artistic skill, but also something deeper: a developing artistic instinct and sense of direction. We want students to become performers who are focused, ready, and prepared — and ensembles capable of achieving at an extraordinarily high level.

Soon, the first rehearsals captured in these photographs will look very different.

Primary Choir, Primary Strings, and Secondary Contemporary Choir will perform throughout the year, including at community celebrations such as our Tree Lighting and concerts. Meanwhile, the cast of The Little Mermaid JR. has begun the much longer journey from its first rehearsal to a fully realised musical production.

Right now, though, they are at the beginning.

That seems particularly fitting for this year’s Performing Arts season theme: THE WORLD BEYOND.

The world beyond is where we are going.

It’s the performance that doesn’t exist yet. It’s the skill a student doesn’t yet know they possess. It’s the confidence they haven’t developed yet, the ensemble that hasn’t quite become an ensemble, and the achievement that might currently seem just beyond reach.

These first days are where that journey starts.

So, to every student who has taken that first step: Lean in and trust yourself.

We can’t wait to see where you go.
