STEAM

This term, the topic in Year 6 is “Fairgrounds” and the students have been learning all about the different types of rides and how they work. In STEAM lessons this term, the students have designed and made their own moving fairgrounds, using only card and electric motors.

The process began with lessons to build the students’ skills, such as cutting with scissors and craft knives, craft knife safety and drawing nets of 3D shapes. The students also had the opportunity to make several practice models to refine their skills before starting work on the final project. After researching a ride that they were interested in, the students designed custom nets, and carefully assembled the models. The final challenge was adding the motors using simple pulleys, drawing on their knowledge of circuits from IPC lessons.

This was a challenging project for the start of the year and the students all made wonderful progress in their practical skills, which they will be able to apply to future projects. Well done Year 6!

Nord Anglia Education schools enjoy a unique collaboration with MIT, the world’s leading university, which provides students with exciting opportunities in STEAM. Next week, Mr Edward will be taking six students to Regents International School Pattaya, Thailand, to take part in the Middle East and South East Asia STEAM Festival. As part of this event, our students will listen to expert speakers and take part in practical workshops to explore one of this year’s STEAM challenges that has been set by MIT, exclusively for Nord Anglia students. The students will be looking at how we can use innovative technology to explore and protect the inaccessible areas of our planet. We look forward to sharing photographs and news from the event when they return!
