Periods of uncertainty often prompt important conversations with children. They hear the news, notice changes around them, and sense when the adults in their lives are concerned. Naturally, they begin to ask questions.
Moments like these remind us why education matters so deeply.
Schools do far more than teach subjects. They help children understand the world they are growing into and give them the confidence to face it with resilience, empathy, and sound judgement. Academic knowledge will always be important, but the values children build alongside that knowledge will shape how they navigate the challenges and responsibilities of the future.
Research in education and psychology consistently points to the importance of these qualities. Studies on perseverance and wellbeing show that children who learn how to manage setbacks, remain hopeful, and seek support when needed are far better prepared for the complexities of adult life. Equally, children who learn to recognise the experiences of others grow into thoughtful, responsible members of society.
At Nord Anglia International School Abu Dhabi, these values are built through everyday experiences across school life.
Sport is one of the places where children learn resilience most clearly. Whether they are training with the NAS Abu Dhabi Lions, competing in ADISSA fixtures, or pushing their limits in development groups, students experience both success and disappointment. They learn that progress takes effort, that teamwork matters, and that setbacks are part of learning. With the guidance of their coaches and teachers, these moments become powerful lessons in perseverance and self-belief.
The performing arts provide a space where children build confidence and courage. Preparing for productions and performances asks students to step outside their comfort zone. Through rehearsal, collaboration, and encouragement from their peers, they discover that challenges often lead to unexpected growth.
Some of the most memorable lessons happen beyond the classroom. Our Tanzania expedition gave students the opportunity to experience a different environment and to work together through new challenges. Experiences like this encourage young people to adapt, support one another, and see the wider world with a fresh perspective.
Compassion grows in similar ways. Children learn empathy not only through discussion, but through meaningful action.
Throughout the year, our students take part in initiatives that encourage them to give back and recognise the contributions of others. During Ramadan, for example, members of our school community have been providing Iftar meals each evening for our support staff. It is a simple but powerful gesture. Students see what generosity looks like in practice and understand that kindness is something we live, not simply talk about.
We also create opportunities for children to reflect directly on resilience and wellbeing. Events such as our Resilience Run encourage students to challenge themselves while supporting one another. More recently, students took part in sessions with IMG Academy mental performance coaches, exploring how athletes build focus, manage pressure, and maintain confidence in demanding situations. These conversations help students understand that resilience is a skill that can be strengthened over time.
Alongside these experiences, our #MEtime programme and balanced school day encourage children to pause, reflect, and care for their own wellbeing. Learning how to manage energy, emotions, and relationships is an essential part of growing up.
When children experience these lessons repeatedly – in classrooms, on sports fields, on stage, and through acts of service – they begin to carry those values with them. Over time, resilience and compassion become part of how they approach the world.
At Nord Anglia International School Abu Dhabi, compassion and commitment are two of our founding values, and they are woven through every aspect of school life: in the classroom, through co-curricular opportunities, in service to others, and in the everyday relationships that shape our community. Just as importantly, resilience grows best when children feel safe, valued, and that they belong. The supportive culture we have built at NAS Abu Dhabi gives students the confidence to take risks, face challenges, and recover from setbacks, knowing they are part of a community that will guide and support them. This is how values become habits, choices, and ways of being that children carry with them into the future.
As educators and parents, we cannot remove every difficulty that young people may encounter. What we can do is help them grow into individuals who face uncertainty with courage, treat others with respect, and look for ways to contribute positively to the communities around them.
That, ultimately, is the role of education. It is about helping children grow into people who are ready for the future, not only academically, but as thoughtful and compassionate human beings.
