For Mu Escubil, whose family has been a part of Northbridge International School Cambodia (NISC) since 2006, the school’s approach to learning has always been more than just about academics.
“When it was time for preschool, choosing Northbridge felt like the natural step,” Mu says. “It turned out to be the kind of place where our girls could really grow - not just in their learning, but in life.”
Mu’s daughters have thrived at Northbridge, growing in ways that go beyond just their academic performance. “They worked hard in class, but they also played sports, took on leadership roles, and learned how to work well with others,” Mu says. “They learned when to lead and when to step back and support the team. That balance of confidence and humility is something I really value.”
To the school’s principal, Frances Morton, this balanced approach is one of the distinguishing features of an outstanding education. “At Northbridge, academic excellence is important, but we want our students to be more than just good test-takers. We want them to be curious, compassionate, and capable of thinking critically,” Frances says. “We strive to help our students go beyond memorising facts. They should be able to ask questions, find solutions, and engage in community action and service.”
Mu has seen the impact of this philosophy in her daughters’ journeys. Natasha, now pursuing a master's degree in economics in Germany, Mikaella, studying graphic design and applying for a master's in game and animation design, and Mayumi, who is preparing for higher education in Europe, all showcase how Northbridge's holistic approach has shaped their success.
What makes Mu most confident in the approach is the emphasis on critical thinking and independent learning. “The IB program at Northbridge is rigorous,” Mu shares. “But it’s not just about pressure or performance. It teaches students how to learn in a meaningful way and gives them the support they need to grow. My daughters knew how to manage their time, face problems thoughtfully, and adapt to the demands of university life. I think this speaks volumes about how well Northbridge nurtured them.”
Frances Morton also underscores the role of student leadership in this development. “We want to empower our students to take on leadership roles, to have a voice, and to be prepared to make a difference in the world,” Frances explains. “The leadership opportunities here are extensive and well-supported. Our students learn resilience through these experiences and become leaders not just in the classroom but in the community.”
Mu has witnessed this firsthand with her daughters. “They’ve learned how to lead and support others, and this has helped them grow both personally and professionally,” she says. “They’ve been encouraged to pursue leadership roles, and that’s helped shape their independence and self-confidence.”
Frances Morton emphasises that this leadership development is not just about taking on titles but about instilling a deeper sense of responsibility. “Our leadership approach is collaborative and inclusive,” Frances explains. “We put students at the centre of everything we do, empowering them to drive change and create a supportive culture within the school. This culture of support leads to a culture of growth and innovation.”
Mu’s experience at Northbridge aligns perfectly with this vision. “It’s not just about academic achievement,” Mu reflects. “It’s about the people. Our kids didn’t just attend Northbridge; they were part of something. They were seen, encouraged, and felt like they belonged. Knowing that they were in a place where they felt safe, supported, and understood was everything. That’s the foundation that’s carried them through to where they are now.”
Through a mix of personal growth, academic rigor, and community involvement, Northbridge International School Cambodia continues to foster a nurturing environment where students not only excel in their studies but also develop into well-rounded, confident people ready for the future. Whether it’s through leadership roles, extracurricular activities, or the holistic development supported by the school’s leadership team, Northbridge ensures that every student finds their place and is prepared to succeed in life beyond the classroom.
