I have worked at two large primary schools in Hertfordshire, England, since qualifying as a teacher in July 1998. In those years I have led Year 2, been KS1 Leader and KS2 Leader, Senior Leadership Team, Subject leader for art, DT and Computing, School Self Evaluation Leader and in 2007 was made Assistant Head. I was fortunate to be part of the Headship team that achieved an Outstanding grading. I continued in this role until September 2012 when I decided to step back and focus more on my teaching role and being a mummy to my two lovely girls.
The experiences I’ve had in each of the above roles have been both challenging and extremely rewarding and have equipped me with a wide range of transferrable skills and a broad knowledge bank upon which I will be able to draw in this new school setting.
I started my career in teaching as a year 2 teacher and in the 20 years that I have taught, 14 of these have been in year 2, I particularly love teaching this age of child. They are like little sponges soaking up everything you teach them. They lose their teeth, shoot up and become proper little independent characters. Results in reading, writing and maths have consistently been above the National and Hertfordshire averages while I have been in Year 2. I have continued to achieve Outstanding outcomes year on year for the children in my care.
I am able to adapt and apply my skills to most things I’m asked to do and am keen to get involved in all aspects of school life. I love working as part of a team and learning from others.
I have been married to my husband Alan for 11 years and we have two young daughters Lily and Emily. It has always been a dream of ours to teach abroad and see what the world has to offer. Having young children has put a slight hold on this but it was a family decision to all join BIS Abu Dhabi in 2018 as ‘Team Cocker’ and we are looking forward to this exciting chapter in our lives. We love the out door life, we love camping and spending days at the beach so the good weather will hopefully allow us to do this more often.
I love teaching, it is all I ever wanted to be from a young child and it has never disappointed. Each day brings new experiences and challenges and the children motivate me to be my best for them.
I am always happy to try new things and adapt my teaching to new ideas and pedagogy. I feel at BIS Abu Dhabi my own development as a teacher in the international sector will be nurtured and valued and I look forward to that journey.
