Hello, I’m Kate, my family and I arrived in Bangkok in March 2020 after my husband was offered a job here.…(what a time to move from the UK to Thailand)! Myself and my two young sons have spent the last few months getting to know the city and as a family we have loved travelling around this beautiful country.

I have lived in Thailand before. When I finished school, I took a gap year and worked in Mahidol Wittanyusorn School in Nakhon Pathom. This gave me a real taste for experiencing other countries and cultures. When I returned to the UK, I completed my Bachelors degree in Business Studies and moved to London. My first significant work role was in a training provider for young people who had been unable to continue in mainstream education. I was a welfare officer and assessor for young people doing vocational qualifications.

I loved this job, the young people I worked with were inspiring. They brought so much fun and laughter, despite facing significant difficulties in their own lives. They made me realise I wanted to work face to face with people enabling them to get through challenges and take opportunities. Before my next career step, I decided to travel through South America for 7 months. I learnt a little Spanish and loved having the opportunity to visit so many beautiful countries. I spent a lot of time trekking in amazing mountainous areas.

On my return to the UK, I went back to University and achieved my Masters in Social Work, qualifying in 2010. I went on to work in local government teams doing complex long-term work with people who were experiencing learning disability and mental health difficulties. In 2014 I went on to do postgraduate study specialising in Mental Health and I began working as an Approved Mental Health Professional alongside my Social Work role. This work involved assessment of individuals facing serious mental health crises. My final role before leaving the UK was as a team manager of a social work team where I was involved in managing and coordinating serious and complex safeguarding cases. Outside of work I continued to travel especially to countries with fantastic mountains. My husband and I have walked in the Himalayas in Nepal and India. When the boys are old enough, we plan to start family trips to the mountains!!

I am so delighted to have had the opportunity to join the St Andrews community. I am super excited to start in the primary school counsellor role. I truly believe that the counsellor role can be a great support to students, parents and staff alongside excellent teaching to enable the school to be truly inclusive. I relish the opportunity to be a part of a team looking to support difference and help young people reach their own personal goals.
