Curriculum for Middle School - Ages 11 to 14

At BISH we recognize that Middle School is a phenomenally exciting time when our students make critical life choices about who they are, how they work, what they aspire to be and how they intend to get there.

Our learning programme is designed to ensure our students feel supported, challenged, inspired and that they have ample opportunities to learn who they are and how they learn, while being exposed to a broad, balanced and rigorous academic programme that provides as many opportunities as possible for their next stage at school. We also believe that Middle School should be about inspiration, passion, curiosity, trial and error, personal discovery and creating opportunities.

The Association for Middle Level Education (AMLE) is an internationally-recognized organization that is dedicated to improving the educational experiences of all Middle School aged students, both here in the United States and globally. They identified four essential attributes they believe are crucial for the success of any Middle School establishment.

    Using the distinctive nature of young adolescents as the foundation upon which all decisions about school organization, policies, curriculum, instruction, and assessment are made.

    Ensuring every student learns and every member of the learning community is held to high expectations.

    Providing all students with the knowledge and skills they need to take responsibility for their lives, to address life's challenges, to function successfully at all levels of society, and to be creators of knowledge.

    Advocating for and ensuring every student's right to learn and providing appropriately challenging and relevant learning opportunities for every student.

These tenets mirror our own beliefs and we are committed to ensuring our Middle School consistently strives to embody these attributes. We believe that by embracing these four essential hallmarks, we can co-construct a learning environment that is stimulating, supportive and one that provides a rich and rewarding experience for our students as they transition into successful and well-rounded young adults.  

Key goals for our Middle School: 

  1. All students will be inspired to take responsibility for the direction of their own learning. 

  1. All students will receive the appropriate support required to meet the developmental needs of a Middle Schooler. 

  1. All students will be exposed to a broad, balanced learning programme that provides authentic learning opportunities and real-world experiences which prepare them for the next phase of school and beyond. 

  1. All students will gain an understanding of how they learn best and what they can do to develop into effective and passionate lifelong learners. 

  1. All students will learn to work collaboratively with both their peers and the faculty as they co-construct their learning. 

To ensure our Middle School meets these  goals, the curriculum has been organized into nine distinct area:

These areas vertically align with both the Pre-IB and IB DP/CP sections of our High School programme. Our Middle School curriculum is drawn from a number of internationally recognized sources to ensure our students have the required level of knowledge and understanding they need to progress successfully to the next academic stage as well as the  opportunity to identify and develop their passions in the key disciplines we offer.   

We also begin to take the opportunity to touch on the external examination boards we use in High School to ensure our students are gradually yet fully prepared for the Cambridge iGCSE, the International Baccalaureate Diploma Programme and International Baccalaureate Career-related Programme.
