What does Rock School have to offer?

One week ago we were visited by Henriette Madsen from Rock School UK who gave all instrumental staff a presentation on what Rock School has to offer and the new guitar, drum and bass (GDB) syllabus

Rock School presentation

Rock School UK, it is the equivalent of ABRSM for contemporary music. Rock School offers contemporary music exams in guitar, drums, bass, ukulele, voice, piano, keyboard, music theory and music production. In addition to this Rock School also offers Performing Arts and Vocational qualifications.

In the presentation we learned more about the new GDB syllabus. For those of you that had a child taking an exam on one of these instruments last year, all books are still valid. The new books are in addition to the previous books, they contain commissioned arrangements of pop and rock's musical heritage. Genres in the new books range from blues, rock, pop, soul, funk, R&B, jazz fusion, reggae, punk rock, alternative rock, grime and hip hop. The exam structure remains completely the same.

There will also be a new piano syllabus that will hopefully be coming out in or around February 2019. This will be a new revised syllabus as there were queries that some of the grade levels were more difficult than the ABRSM levels.

We also learned that it is possible to take exams as a band rather than an individual. As we have an ever growing Rock Band programme in school we are very much aware that this will appeal to many students and is something that we would like to implement this year.

Finally, UCAS points. Henriette spoke about how students from Grades 6-8 can gain UCAS points for university depending on what marks they achieve in the exam. For Grade 6 students can earn up to 12 UCAS points, Grade 7 up to 16 UCAS points and Grade 8 up to 30 UCAS points.

Rock School UK is currently situated in over 40 countries and we are very proud to currently be the only exam centre in Poland. If you are interested in your child learning an instrument or taking Rock School exams please don't hesitate to get in contact. If your child is currently taking lessons with one of our tutors in school they will be able to provide you with all the relevant information in terms of how and when to enter for the exams.

We are planning for the next exam session to be held in June 2019 and usually applications should be completed by April 2019. Exact dates will be confirmed at a later date.

If anyone has any queries or further questions with regards to Rock School or the information provided please don't hesitate to get in touch!
