LEARNING SUPPORT AT ST ANDREWS

We strongly believe in inclusive education at St Andrews, welcoming all students regardless of their needs. Our mainstream Learning Support is designed to provide tailored opportunities for each learner to reach their potential. Our mainstream teachers provide quality first and adaptive teaching methods to support all students in their mixed-ability mainstream classes.

Understanding Learning Support

Sometimes our students need a little extra help, to enable them to thrive. We have thorough assessment and referral processes in place to support students with special educational needs and disabilities (SEND). Following a referral from the class teacher and/ or Head of Year, and after informal and formal assessments by a variety of our specialist transdisciplinary team - teachers, therapists, counselling team - students are then placed on our Learning Support register, and Student Support Plans, or Individual Learning and Health Plans (ILHPs) are created if needed. These plans provide detailed information about each student's needs and strategies for teachers to optimise learning, and to support the student in all school environments.

Our Approach to Learning Support

Our mainstream Learning Support offers support for academics in-class, in small groups, or one-to-one, focusing not only on academics but also on social skills and self-esteem. Our Learning Support Assistants, trained by our specialist team, provide individualised and group support to students in mainstream classrooms.

We also have a broad range of short term interventions available to support each learner, if needed - for example, speech and language, social communication and executive function support groups, occupational therapy, art therapy, orton - gillingham specific learning difficulty support, and counselling services. Students are referred through the robust referral system in school, and access these interventions for a block of a term at a time, following the ‘Assess, Plan, Do, Review’ model of intervention.

We have a range of specialists employed by the school who can deliver formal assessments, for example a clinical psychologist, and level 7 assessors who can test and apply for exam access arrangements. We also collaborate with speech and language and occupational therapists, both employed by the school, and working alongside us as external therapists.
