It all adds up: why sports at St Andrews Bangkok wins

Sports at St Andrews - Sports at St Andrews

Sport at St Andrews is truly special, with around 7 in 10 students actively involved across many sports, including Badminton, Basketball, Football, Volleyball, Gymnastics, Swimming, Synchronised Swimming, Water Polo, Golf, Dance, Tennis, Touch Rugby, Rugby, Bouldering, Track and Field, and Chess. The programme reaches most children across the school, creating a vibrant, energetic community where participation is the norm.

Where every student gets in the game

More than 1,600 students are involved in sport, demonstrating both the scale of the opportunity and students' enthusiasm to take part. This engagement extends beyond practice, with over 1,000 students representing 152 teams taking part in competitive fixtures and events, giving students the chance to represent the school, build confidence, and experience teamwork in action.

Growing a lifelong love of sport

What makes this programme even more impressive is the consistency of participation across age groups. In the Primary School, around 74% of students are involved in sport. At the same time, in High School, participation remains strong at around 60%, showing that as students grow older, sport continues to play an important role alongside academic commitments. In fact, many students, especially in Senior Studies (Years 12 and 13) and alums, often say sports remain an important part of their lives, even when academics become the main focus, because of the joy and stress relief they offer. This reflects a culture where being active is not something students grow out of, but something they carry with them throughout their school journey.

Open to all: an inclusive approach

We’re proud of the St Andrews Inclusive Sports Programme, which has balanced gender participation, with approximately 51% boys and 49% girls. This is a powerful indicator that sport is genuinely accessible to all students. The result is a sporting environment where every child, regardless of gender or experience level, feels encouraged to take part.

Each term, we look forward to welcoming as many children as possible into our after‑school Sports Extracurricular Activities (ECAs). Before committing to a sport and helping children find the right fit, we offer free ‘Come and Try Weeks’. During these weeks, students can sign up to try different sports before whole‑school ECA sign‑ups begin.  These sessions give new students a chance to settle in, allow children just beginning their sporting journey to explore different options, and give those wanting to try something new the chance to do so. They also ensure that each child is placed into the most suitable learning group based on their current level, helping them feel confident and supported from the start.

Building community through sport

Beyond participation and performance, sport at St Andrews plays a powerful role in shaping school culture. Match days are not just events for players; they are moments when parents gather to create a welcoming atmosphere on the sidelines. It is not uncommon to see families cheering not only for their own child’s team but also for others.

This spirit extends beyond student activities. Parents are encouraged to engage in school life through dedicated parent ECAs, including fitness sessions, yoga, tennis and more. These activities offer opportunities to build friendships and become more involved in the school experience.

This culture of encouragement and respect is something unique to St Andrews. Sportsmanship, inclusivity, wellbeing, and mutual respect are not simply taught as ideals; students experience them every day. Students see firsthand what it means to support others, celebrate effort, and take pride in being part of a positive and collaborative environment.

Every achievement is celebrated

St Andrews celebrates sport in many different ways. Alongside first-, second-, and third-place achievements, we place equal importance on progress, participation, and personal growth. From dedicated Sports Celebration Nights, where achievements and development are recognised, to energetic Sports Days and House competitions across Primary and High School, students experience the joy of sport in many formats.

Families are also part of this journey through events such as the annual STA Community Sports Day, where parents, students, and staff come together to participate, compete, and enjoy shared experiences. These occasions help strengthen the strong relationships that define the St Andrews community.

What this means for your family

The impact of sport at St Andrews shines through in students’ personal growth. Participation builds resilience, teamwork, leadership, and confidence. With so many children involved, these benefits are shared widely, fostering a strong sense of belonging across the school. For prospective families, this means your child isn’t simply offered the chance to join in; they are welcomed into a culture where being active, trying new things, and being part of a team are natural and celebrated parts of school life.
