Course Descriptions

Students will participate in core courses tailored to the artistic focus of each programme. Core courses engage students in creative exploration, programme-specific repertoire, and performance techniques. These skills and more are further enforced with general courses that students from both programmes will experience.

Discovery

The core class of the College/Conservatory Prep (CCP) intensive: A daily two-hour exploration of singing-acting in classical music. In the first hour students engage in exercises to free their voice, faces, and bodies for maximal expression, and discover how to combine all three into dynamic singing-acting. The second hour is an informal master class, where students put the concepts learned in the first hour into practical use, working on their three audition art-songs that they will perform at the end of the program.

Diction

For students in the CCP intensive only: An informal master class dedicated to Italian and German diction as well as vocal literature in each language. Students will learn the keys to singing beautifully, clearly, and idiomatically in the both languages while discovering repertoire that is not over done and will suit young students’ voices. This will allow students to shine in their upcoming conservatory or college voice program auditions. Students will explore the International Phonetic Alphabet (IPA) as a pronunciation guide that will serve them for singing in all foreign languages, as well as coach their audition songs so they can sing like a native speaker.

Morning Movement & Body Awareness

For students in the CCP intensive only: Learn how to prime your body and instrument for efficient use and beautiful singing throughout the whole day. Exercises will include fundamentals of body-mapping, breathing, and stretching along with explorations into the mind-body connection, balance, and spatial awareness.

Studio Class

For students in both programs: Small groups (7-10 students) are assigned to one voice teacher for the duration of the intensive. Several times during the week, the teacher will meet outside of private lesson times with the whole group in an informal master class, as an opportunity for students to see other students in the learning process, reinforcing key concepts, and receiving a chance to ask questions and learn from their colleagues.

Alexander Group Class

For students in both programs: Learn how to let the right thing do itself. Learning through conscious awareness about how we think about our singing and what we are doing with our thoughts and bodies, both unconscious and conscious, to compromise healthy coordination needed for artistry, efficiency, ease, poise, and freedom. Alexander Technique learning involves techniques to stop the habitual patterns that keep us from making change, while calming the nervous system so that it is in the best state of learning and performing. Some techniques include Constructive Rest and Inhibition (not doing your habit) and learning about how the relationship of our head to our neck and back is primary for full functioning.

Daily Town Hall Sessions:

These unique sessions are led by our expert faculty and offer invaluable insight into the professional world of vocal arts. Sessions will focus on special topics that are prevalent to the development of young singers, such as:

  • The Importance of Vocal Health
  • Contemporary vs. Classical Singing
  • Dealing with Nerves
  • Your Body Tells the Story: Physical Theater in Singing
