Congratulations to Poppy Mulford, a year 8 student at Regents International School Pattaya who has been awarded the prestigious Kurt Hahn Award by Round Square.

The award is named after the founder of Round Square, Kurt Hahn, who believed that education is about the growth and development of the 'whole' person. It is awarded annually to recognise an 'exceptional act of service to others'.

Regents International School Pattaya nominated Poppy for her achievements through the Global Citizenship Award and her amazing fund raising efforts for a young Thai girl called Yok, who cannot hear.

Poppy met Yok during Round Square Week two years ago and decided to ride her bike from Ayutthaya, the ancient capital to Thailand, to Angkor Wat, the ancient capital of Cambodia, to raise money to help improve Yok’s hearing.

Poppy cycled the 418km from Temple to Temple in just five days and raised a phenomenal 250,000 Baht, almost US$8,000. The money has been used to provide Yok with expert medical advice and hearing aid equipment, and the remaining money will support Yok’s education and welfare for the next five years.

Rod Fraser, Chairman of Round Square visited the school in May to present Poppy with a letter from the Executive Director of the organisation informing her that she had been selected as the winner from a group of seven nominations.

He said, “Poppy is a young lady who exemplifies the Round Square motto that ‘there is more in your than you think’ and is a thoroughly deserving winner of this worldwide award, which is not necessarily presented every year but which acknowledges an act of courage or selflessness of significant proportion."

Poppy will receive the Kurt Hahn Award at the Round Square International Conference, being held in Jordan in October, where she will also present to delegates.
