Belonging: The Heartbeat of BIS Abu Dhabi

Message from the Principal, Alan Cocker

When I walk through the corridors of BIS Abu Dhabi, I see something that makes me proud every day: students who feel they belong. Belonging is more than a word, it’s the foundation of everything we do. When children feel safe and valued, they take risks, try new things, and discover passions they never imagined.

A Platform for Exploration

Our school is an ecosystem of opportunities. From Engineering Club to Chamber Choir, debating to rugby, sustainability projects to textile arts, every child can find their tribe. Sometimes that tribe becomes a lifelong passion; sometimes it’s a stepping stone to something new. Either way, it matters because it gives every student a sense of belonging and the courage to try.

I recently attended an event organised by one of our student bands to raise awareness for sustainability. Watching them play music, dance freely, and create together was inspiring. Each person had space to shine, yet together they created something bigger than themselves. Both the students performing and the audience experienced real joy and a sense of togetherness. That’s what belonging looks like.

Confidence, Resilience, Joy

Belonging isn’t just about comfort, it’s about courage with support. I’ve seen it in our youngest learners during the FS2 Winter Production, standing on stage with confidence.

I’ve seen it in our older students returning from Duke of Edinburgh expeditions, tired but smiling, proud of what they achieved together. These moments build resilience and character.

A Purposeful Design

None of this happens by accident. Our curriculum is deliberate, our extra-curricular programme complements and deepens experiences, and our leadership roles give students a voice. Over the last two years, we’ve worked hard to create this rich ecosystem, and the recent showcases, sporting events, and community performances remind me why it matters: when we give children opportunities, they rise to the occasion.

Looking Ahead

We’re deliberately expanding pathways for our students, helping them explore future directions and connect learning to real-world opportunities through strong parent partnerships. The recent Senior School event was a great example: an evening of discovery where families engaged with teachers and current students, explored course options, and began mapping out the next steps on the journey into adulthood.

This work is ongoing, and I’m proud of what we’ve built so far, but even more excited about what’s ahead. We will continue to evaluate, review, and create new platforms for our students to thrive, opening more doors and helping them see where their learning can take them next. Parent partnerships are gaining momentum, giving students rich opportunities to experience how learning applies beyond the classroom.

Belonging is the heartbeat of BIS Abu Dhabi. It gives our students the confidence to explore, the resilience to persist, and the joy of discovering who they are, and who they might become.
