Student Trips and Experiential Learning at BIS Abu Dhabi

trip_cover

Academic success remains a key part of every student's educational journey, but the experiences that often leave the greatest impact are those that take place beyond the classroom.

Whether exploring local landmarks, taking part in fieldwork, completing a challenging expedition or working alongside communities overseas, these experiences help students develop confidence, independence and a broader understanding of the world around them.

They also encourage students to Think Unprompted, to be curious, ask questions, take initiative and engage actively with the world beyond their immediate surroundings. These qualities are increasingly important in a rapidly changing, AI-driven world, where the ability to think critically, independently, and creatively matters more than ever, and are often developed most effectively through real-world experience.

Throughout the year, students at BIS Abu Dhabi take part in a wide range of enrichment experiences that complement their academic studies and support their personal growth.

Learning Beyond Classroom

One of BIS Abu Dhabi's greatest strengths is the breadth of opportunities available to students beyond the classroom.

This year alone, our students have experienced a wide range of enrichment opportunities, from the Year 1 Big Bus Tour and Year 6 Grand Mosque visit to Al Ain Adventure in Primary, to Khorfakkan and Haraka residential experiences, Geography and Environmental Systems fieldwork, the Umrah pilgrimage, and Duke of Edinburgh’s Award expeditions in Secondary.

Many of these experiences are closely linked to the curriculum, helping students deepen their understanding of classroom learning through real-world application while developing resilience, teamwork, leadership and problem-solving skills.

Developing Global Citizens

In an increasingly interconnected world, it is more important than ever for young people to develop a global perspective.

One particularly impactful example is our Tanzania service-learning experience. During this trip, students engage in meaningful service projects within the local community, including visits to local orphanages and community organisations.

This experience goes far beyond volunteering, students build relationships, develop cultural understanding, and gain first-hand insight into the challenges and opportunities faced by communities in different parts of the world. Experiences such as these help students develop empathy, compassion, and a deeper understanding of their role as global citizens.

Students also participate in international opportunities across destinations such as Borneo, Switzerland, Iceland and Spain, further developing their understanding of different cultures, environments and global issues.

Preparing Students for an AI-Driven Future

As artificial intelligence continues to transform the world around us, the importance of enrichment has never been greater.

While AI can increasingly process information, generate content and automate routine tasks, it cannot replace the distinctly human qualities that will define future success: being Creative, Committed, Collaborative, Curious, Critical and Compassionate – also known to us as the 6Cs, or our Learner Ambitions.

These are precisely the qualities that enrichment develops.

Looking Ahead

We recognise the powerful impact that experiential learning has on students' academic progress, personal development, and future aspirations, and we are committed to expanding the range of opportunities available across all year groups.

As part of this commitment, we are exploring the introduction of a dedicated annual Enrichment Week within the Secondary curriculum. The vision is to provide students with opportunities to engage in educational visits, service-learning projects, career-related experiences, leadership opportunities, and interdisciplinary learning activities beyond the traditional classroom environment.

We are also continually reviewing and evolving out international trips programme. Next year, we will introduce new destinations, including Japan, Sri Lanka, and Singapore, while rotating the trip to Cuenca, Spain with a new experience in Berlin.

Our goal is clear: to ensure that every BIS Abu Dhabi student leaves school not only with excellent academic qualifications, but also with the confidence, character, skills, and experiences needed to thrive in an increasingly complex world.

Because education is about more than what students know. It is about who they become.
