How CAS Helps BIS Abu Dhabi Students Develop Future-Ready Skills

One of the most distinctive elements of the International Baccalaureate Diploma Programme (IBDP) is Creativity, Activity, Service (CAS), a core component that challenges students to step beyond the classroom and apply their learning in real-world contexts.

At The British International School Abu Dhabi, CAS provides students with opportunities to lead projects that reflect their passions while developing the skills needed for future success. This year, two student-led initiatives — Once Upon a Musical and Bandzania 2026 — demonstrated how CAS empowers students to transform their interests into impactful experiences for themselves and others. 

Creating a Student-Led Musical Production

For IBDP student Lily, CAS became an opportunity to create a student-led musical theatre showcase for older Secondary students.

Passionate about the performing arts, she and a group of friends launched Once Upon a Musical, providing students with a platform to perform and bring a shared creative vision to life.

What began as an idea in December soon evolved into a seven-month journey involving planning, rehearsals, choreography, performance preparation and countless logistical decisions.

Putting together a musical production required students to take on a wide range of responsibilities typically associated with professional theatre productions, including directing, administration, choreography, stage management, costume planning and technical design.

"We took on the roles of designers, stage managers, planners, directors and performers," Lily reflected. "I am so proud of everyone involved for their commitment and contributions."

The team's resilience was tested when regional events disrupted their original timeline. Rehearsals were postponed, the performance date changed, and several cast members became unavailable. Rather than abandoning the project, the students adapted their plans and continued working towards their goal.

"It was a difficult and disappointing period because so much work had gone into the original date," said Lily. "Despite this, we managed to secure a new date and thankfully got back into school to rehearse."

When the curtains finally rose, the sense of achievement made every challenge worthwhile.

Reflecting on the impact of the project, Lily said it demonstrated what students can achieve when given ownership of a creative challenge. "I think the biggest impact of this project was showing people that students are completely capable of putting together a musical production," she said.

"The biggest thing I've learned is that I am more capable than I thought, and resilience really pays off even when it doesn't feel like it will."

Bringing Music and Service Together Through Bandzania

While Once Upon a Musicaldemonstrated the power of student-led creativity, Bandzania 2026showcased how students can combine artistic talent with service to create a lasting impact.

For Year 12 studentsMichelangelo and Turkan, a shared passion for music became the foundation for a project that united the school community while raising funds for the school’s charitable cause in Tanzania.

As band leaders for Bandzania 2026, Michelangelo and Turkan helped transform months of planning and rehearsals into a high-energy charity rock concert.Michelangelo led theevent’s live visual production and organisation, while Turkan spearheaded planning, promotion and branding. Alongside their roles as lead guitarist and lead vocalist, they worked with fellow student musicians to deliver an event that combined creativity, leadership and service.  

Inspired by the success of the inaugural event in 2025, the team set out to establishBandzania as an annual tradition that combines live music with meaningful fundraising.

"Music is a massive passion of mine, and I wanted to channel that creative energy into a meaningful service project that could bring our entire school community together for a great cause," Michelangelo explained.

For Turkan, the motivation was equally personal. "It was already our dream to perform a second Bandzania concert," she said. "Our love and passion for music gave us the dedication to bring it to life."

While audiences enjoyed the final performance, the project required extensive behind-the-scenes planning. 

Alongside rehearsing as lead guitarist, Michelangelo coordinated stage logistics andoversaw the visual elements of the live performance. Meanwhile, alongside performing as lead vocalist, Turkan led the promotional campaign, designed event posters and visual assets while coordinating with school departments on eventlogistics.

The team faced a number of challenges, including adapting plans around changing school schedules and coordinating multiple technical elements, from lighting and visuals to sound checks and stage design.

"Teamwork was absolutely vital," said Michelangelo. "We overcame challenges by staying highly organised, communicating constantly and trusting each other to deliver on our respective roles."

Turkan agreed, highlighting the importance of collaboration throughout the process. "Keeping a project with so many moving parts on track required constant communication and complete trust in one another's areas of expertise," she said. "Despite the challenges, our shared dedication to the music and our determination to make the concert a reality helped us overcome every obstacle."

The result was an unforgettable evening that not only raised vital funds but also strengthened connections across the school community.

Reflecting on the experience, Michelangelo said the project pushed him beyond his comfort zone.

"I couldn't just focus on being a musician; I had to take on a much broader leadership role. Balancing rehearsals, stage layouts and visual production taught me how to communicate effectively, manage competing priorities and adapt when plans changed."

For Turkan, the experience highlighted the importance of resilience and people-focused leadership.

"This journey taught me that leadership goes far beyond executing a plan," she reflected. "When challenges threatened to disrupt our timeline, I learned the importance of staying adaptable, communicating openly and helping the team stay motivated. Those are skills I will carry with me long after school."

Developing Skills for the Future

For CAS Coordinator Victoria Collinson, projects such as Once Upon a Musical and Bandzania 2026demonstrate the unique value of the IBDP experience.

"CAS is such a unique part of the IBDP because it provides students with an opportunity to make themselves stand out and shine while pursuing their passions," she said.

Mrs Collinson praised the students for their resilience and commitment throughout the planning and delivery of their projects.

"Through difficult times, the students continued learning despite being online, having members of the team travelling to different countries and school CCA closures. This shows the power of their passion and their resilience as learners."

She believes the experience equips students with valuable lifelong skills that extend far beyond the IB Diploma Programme. Through CAS, students take ownership of meaningful projects, developing confidence, independence and the ability to work effectively with others. These experiences help prepare them for success at university and in their future careers.

"Their organisation and outside-the-box thinking have been second to none and will help them stand out in future university interviews and beyond. For students moving into the IBDP, my advice is to aim big. Projects like these are not easy, but they are hugely rewarding and show you the realities of life beyond the classroom."

For many students, CAS becomes one of the most memorable aspects of the IBDP, offering an opportunity to pursue their passions while making a meaningful contribution to others.
