BIS Abu Dhabi Graduate Interview

BIS Abu Dhabi Graduate, Alexander

Meet Alexander, Class of 2026 IB Diploma Programme Graduate

Achieving an outstanding 44 points in the International Baccalaureate Diploma Programme is a remarkable accomplishment. For BIS Abu Dhabi graduate Alexander, however, the result represents far more than academic success. It reflects years of perseverance, resilience and the support of the community around him.

Alexander joined The British International School Abu Dhabi at the start of Year 10 in 2022. Four years later, he graduated as one of the school's top IB Diploma Programme scorer with an outstanding 44 points.

When Alexander received his IB results, his first reaction was one of gratitude.

"Receiving my results of 44 points felt like a personal affirmation that the consistency, resilience and countless hours of effort had been reflected in my score. I also felt an overwhelming sense of gratitude for my family, friends and teachers who supported me throughout my journey. Achieving these results felt less like a personal triumph and more the culmination of a collective effort."

This autumn, Alexander will begin studying Mechanical Engineering at Imperial College London, ranked among the world's top universities and internationally recognised for its excellence in engineering, innovation and research.

His decision was driven by both the university's global reputation and the opportunity to learn from leading academics while studying in the heart of London.

Alexander's passion for engineering began with a simple curiosity about how things work.

"I've always been interested in understanding how something works rather than simply accepting that it does. Mechanical Engineering felt like the natural intersection of my interests in mathematics, physics and creative problem-solving."

He hopes to use his studies to develop practical solutions to real-world challenges, from designing more efficient systems to creating technologies that make a lasting positive impact.

Alexander believes the IB Diploma Programme equipped him with far more than strong academic knowledge.

"The IB not only teaches you subjects, but it also teaches you how to think. It challenged me to balance depth with breadth, manage competing priorities and approach problems from multiple perspectives."

Beyond the classroom, one of Alexander's most memorable experiences was completing his Gold Duke of Edinburgh's International Award expedition in Malaysia. The experience strengthened his leadership, resilience and teamwork, while teaching him compassion, empathy and the value of learning from different perspectives. Receiving his Gold Award from HRH Prince Edward, Duke of Edinburgh, was a highlight of his journey.

As he prepares to move to London, Alexander is looking forward to embracing new challenges, gaining independence and learning alongside like-minded students. While he is still exploring where his future career will take him, he hopes to use engineering to create technologies that make a meaningful difference in the world.

Looking back on his final year, which brought unexpected challenges and disruption, Alexander says he learned one lesson above all else.

"You can't always control the circumstances, but you can control your response. Looking back, I think resilience is built during the difficult moments, and that's a lesson I'll carry with me to university and beyond."

Congratulations, Alexander. We’re so proud of you, and we wish you every success as you begin your next chapter at Imperial College London.
